Who is Austin Desanto?

Austin DeSanto, born and raised in Exeter, Pennsylvania, began his wrestling career in high school where he made a name for himself as a formidable wrestler. He was a three-time all-state wrestler and competed for Exeter high school. During his high school career, DeSanto placed fifth in the state and was a runner-up as a junior before heading into his senior year.

As a senior, DeSanto made the bold decision to wrestle the same weight class as future teammate and four-time Pennsylvania state title winner, Spencer Lee. In what can only be described as a vision quest-like run, DeSanto defeated Lee with a late takedown to win his state title. This victory was significant not only because it was his first state title but also because he handed Lee his first and only high school loss.

DeSanto's impressive high school wrestling career caught the attention of the Drexel Dragons, and he wrestled as a true freshman for them. During his first year, he compiled an overall record of 29-7 and was ranked as high as fourth in the nation. It was clear from the start that DeSanto was a rising star in the wrestling world.

DeSanto's early success was only the beginning of his career. He went on to wrestle for the University of Iowa, where he continued to dominate the sport. DeSanto quickly made a name for himself as a fierce competitor and a dynamic wrestler. He has become known for his aggressive style and his willingness to take risks, often attempting high-risk moves that other wrestlers wouldn't dare.

Austin DeSanto began his collegiate wrestling career as a true freshman for the Drexel Dragons in the 2017-2018 season. He quickly made a name for himself with an impressive record of 29-7, which included several upset victories over top-ranked opponents. DeSanto's tenacity and aggressive wrestling style earned him the nickname "The Mad Hatter" among fans and coaches alike.

DeSanto's sophomore season saw him transfer to the University of Iowa, where he joined a team that was already loaded with talent. Despite the stiff competition, DeSanto made an immediate impact, finishing the season with a record of 18-4 and earning a Big Ten Conference title at 133 pounds. DeSanto's performance helped the Hawkeyes win the Big Ten Conference Championship and ultimately finish second at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

DeSanto's junior season was his best yet, as he established himself as one of the top wrestlers in the country at 133 pounds. He finished the season with a record of 20-2 and earned All-American honors by finishing fifth at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. DeSanto's performance helped Iowa win the Big Ten Conference Championship once again and finish as the runner-up at the NCAA Championships.

Austin DeSanto's senior year as a wrestler in college was marked by his pursuit of an NCAA championship title. He started the season strong with a 15-0 record and was ranked as the No. 1 wrestler in his weight class. However, he suffered his first loss of the season to Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State in a closely contested match.

Despite the setback, DeSanto continued to compete at a high level and finished the regular season with a 17-1 record. He received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where he advanced to the semifinals with dominant performances in the early rounds.

How Much Does Austin Desanto Weigh? 

Austin Desanto competed at multiple weight classes throughout his collegiate wrestling career. In his freshman year at Drexel University, he competed at 133 pounds and compiled an overall record of 29-7.

After transferring to the University of Iowa, Desanto moved up to the 141-pound weight class for his sophomore and junior seasons. In his sophomore year, he finished with a record of 18-4 and placed fifth at the NCAA Championships. In his junior year, he went 20-6 and placed seventh at the NCAA Championships.

In his senior year, Desanto moved up to the 149-pound weight class and had a standout season. He went 16-0 in the regular season and won the Big Ten Championship at 149 pounds. He continued his undefeated streak in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the finals where he faced top-seeded and undefeated Sammy Sasso of Ohio State. Despite a valiant effort, Desanto ultimately fell to Sasso and finished as the national runner-up.

Austin Desanto's Best Fight of All Time

It can be challenging to nail down one highlight moment that defines a grappler's career, but in the semifinals of the 2022 Division I NCAA Tournament, DeSanto faced off against his rival, Roman Bravo-Young, in a highly anticipated rematch. DeSanto came out strong, taking an early lead and dominating the match. He eventually won by a score of 10-4, advancing to the NCAA championship match.

Austin Desanto Record

DeSanto finished his collegiate wrestling career with an impressive record of 96-24 and earned multiple All-American honors. He will continue to compete in the sport as a member of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, where he will look to further hone his skills and compete at the highest level.

Austin Desanto Injuries

There is not a lot of information publicly available about specific injuries that Austin DeSanto has suffered throughout his wrestling career. However, like many wrestlers, it is likely that he has dealt with various injuries, including cuts, bruises, sprains, strains, and more serious injuries such as fractures or torn ligaments.

During his senior year at the University of Iowa, DeSanto was forced to miss a match against Michigan State due to an injury, but the specific nature of that injury is unclear. In a post-match press conference, Iowa head coach Tom Brands referred to it as a "precautionary measure" and said that DeSanto would be back to wrestling soon.

In another instance during the 2021 NCAA Championships, DeSanto was seen wearing a large brace on his left knee during one of his matches. However, he was able to wrestle through the injury and finished in fourth place overall in his weight class.

Is Austin Desanto Retired?

While Austin DeSanto finished his college wrestling career at the University of Iowa, he has not officially retired from the sport and is expected to continue coaching and possibly competing in freestyle wrestling.
