The Diamondback Attack: A Complete & Vicious Gi & No-Gi Back Control Submission System by Joel Bane
The back is the most dominant position in grappling, and Coach Joel Bane attacks it using something most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are unprepared to face: the relentless control and submission principles of Catch Wrestling.
- A 3rd Degree BJJ Black Belt under Rigan Machado, a 5th Degree Luta Livre Black Belt under Grandmaster Hugo Duarte, a Judo Black Belt under John Saylor, and the founder and Head Coach of Snake Pit U.S.A., Joel Bane brings 30 years of training and coaching experience
- In The Diamondback Attack, Coach Bane lays out a complete Gi back-control system with integrated No-Gi applications across eight volumes, from the three primary control positions and six foundational entries to Double Wristlock Control and the Transitional Russian Tie.
- This isn't another collection of back takes, it's positional control and catch wrestling pressure aimed at what Bane calls the Quarter-Inch Finish, where a submission is won by the smallest adjustment.

What Will You Learn?
The back is the most dominant position in grappling, and Coach Joel Bane attacks it using something most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are unprepared to face: the relentless control and submission principles of Catch Wrestling.
Bane is a 3rd Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt directly under 9th Degree Red Belt Rigan Machado. He is also a 5th Degree Luta Livre Black Belt directly under 9th Degree Red Belt Grandmaster Hugo Duarte and Duarte’s first-ever North American Black Belt. Additionally, Bane holds a 1st Degree Judo Black Belt under 8th Dan John Saylor, a three-time U.S. National Judo Heavyweight Champion and former Head Coach at the United States Olympic Training Center.
The founder and Head Coach of Snake Pit U.S.A., Bane served as a two-time Team Captain and former Assistant Coach of the U.S. Air Force All-Air Force Wrestling Team in Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling. He was also a two-time U.S. Military World Team Greco-Roman alternate. Bane retired as a Master Sergeant following more than 20 years of active-duty military service, during which he taught hand-to-hand combative skills throughout the United States and while deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
With 30 years of training and coaching experience, Bane’s extensive background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Catch Wrestling, Luta Livre, Greco-Roman Wrestling, and Freestyle Wrestling forms the foundation of this system.
The Diamondback Attack is a complete Gi back-control system, with carefully integrated No-Gi applications, engineered for total positional dominance, control, and submission. Bane begins with his four submission concepts and three primary control positions before introducing the three primary transitional attack controls and the Safe Bail. Together, these concepts teach you how to maintain the position and how to exit safely without surrendering control or exposing yourself to a reversal.
From there, the system expands into six foundational entries, including the Billy Robinson-style wristlock threat and the Basic Zipper Choke. Bane then develops attacks from Launch Pad Control, the Full Gi Diamondback, and Collar Control.
Next come the elements most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners have never encountered: the Transitional Two-on-One, Double Wristlock Control with its German Pin entries, and the Transitional Russian Tie.
Tying the entire system together is Bane’s finishing standard: the Quarter-Inch Finish. This principle recognizes that, at the conclusion of every control sequence and transition, the success of a submission is often determined by the smallest possible adjustment. That is why these chokes, armbars, neck cranks, wristlocks, and shoulder locks continue to work, even against experienced opponents who know they are coming.
If you can take the back but continually lose it, or reach the position only to run out of attacks after the Bow-and-Arrow Choke, the missing piece is usually not another isolated submission. It is a complete control system that makes the submission unavoidable.
Learn how Coach Joel Bane combines three decades of elite grappling experience, Catch Wrestling methodology, and U.S. Air Force wrestling leadership to transform back control into eight volumes of relentless, systematic attack.
