The Mussolini Lock 50/50 Is Broken: The Attack That Changes The Rules Of Leg Locking by Daniel Schuardt

The 50/50 leg lock battle has turned into a slow war of grip fighting and crossed feet, and nobody has broken it open quite like Daniel Schuardt.

  • ADCC 2026 World Championship bronze medalist at -99kg and a black belt under Lachlan Giles, Daniel "The Manchild" Schuardt submitted his way onto the podium in Krakow and landed the Mussolini Lock twice along the way.
  • In The Mussolini Lock 50/50 Is Broken, Schuardt breaks down his signature shin lock, the entries that get you to 50/50, and the complete system of heel hooks, back takes and kneebars built around it.
  • This isn't just a single submission course, it's a new way to play the entire 50/50 position, in the gi and no-gi, with or without heel hooks.

What Will You Learn?

The 50/50 leg lock battle has turned into a slow war of grip fighting and crossed feet, and nobody has broken it open quite like Daniel Schuardt.

Schuardt was one of the breakout performers of ADCC 2026. The Australian black belt won the 2024 ADCC Asia & Oceania Trials, then went to the World Championship in Krakow and took bronze in the stacked -99kg division, submitting all three opponents he beat. Two of those finishes came from the Mussolini Lock, a grip his coach Lachlan Giles first showed him and that he spent the following year refining until it held up against the best grapplers in the world. Now he's sharing the complete system in his first instructional with BJJ Fanatics.

In this course, Schuardt breaks down exactly how the Mussolini Lock works. Instead of cranking the ankle, you set the bony edge of your wrist in the hollow between the shin and the Achilles, pin the heel to your lat and rib cage, hide your second hand behind your elbow and pull your hips into the knee to twist and break across the shin. The lock is so forgiving that it still produces taps when your mechanics are only partly right, and Schuardt shows you every detail that turns a good lock into one that finishes world class opponents. This isn't just a new leg lock, it's a complete 50/50 game built around an attack most people have never learned to defend.

Whether you compete in no-gi submission grappling, hunt leg locks in the gi, or train under IBJJF rules where reaping the knee can get you disqualified, the Mussolini Lock serves as the centerpiece of your lower body attack. Schuardt shows you how to enter 50/50 from K guard, closed guard, De La Riva and off your opponent's own ankle lock attempts, how to finish the cross Achilles lock in the gi, and how to attack from 50/50, outside sankaku, the saddle and straight ashi. A full section on IBJJF considerations keeps gi players, masters competitors and newer grapplers safe from a DQ.

What makes this system so effective is how it changes the whole 50/50 exchange. When your opponent hand fights, weights their foot, turns away or stands up, Schuardt has an answer, and every defense opens the next attack: inside heel hooks, the Tony Montana heel hooking position, 50/50 back takes, the Matrix variation and the 50/50 kneebar. He also shows how the Mussolini Lock counters inferior leg locks and breaks the current crossed feet meta, so you stop playing slow grip battles and start forcing reactions.

If you've ever wondered why elite leg lockers seem to finish from 50/50 while you stay stuck trading grips and hiding your heels, this is the piece you've been missing.

Learn the lock that took Daniel Schuardt to the ADCC podium and turn 50/50 into your best finishing position.
