UFC 232: Jones Defeats Gustafsson to win UFC Light Heavyweight Title

This past weekend at UFC 232 at the Forum in California, Jon Jones stopped Alexander Gustafsson to reclaim the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship belt that had recently been relinquished by Daniel Cormier.  Jones got a takedown early in the third round and was able to pass Gustafsson’s half guard. He was then able to transition to side control and then back control, where he landed heavy right hands. After nine unanswered blows, referee Mike Beltran waved off the fight.

Main Event Fights: Nunes Defeats Cyborg

In the co main event, Amanda Nunes defeated Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino in just 51 seconds.  Both fighters came out very aggressively, swinging wildly looking for the knockout. However, Nunes was the one to land the cleaner punches, and was able to knock Cyborg down.   However, Cyborg was able to recover enough to continue slugging it out. A few moments later, Nunes landed one more punch that knocked Cyborg out. With this win, Nunes becomes the new UFC women’s bantamweight champion, and becomes only the third fighter (Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier) in UFC history to simultaneously hold world titles in two weight classes- and the first female to do so.

Also on the main card,  Michael Chiesa had an impressive win over veteran Carlos Condit.  Chiesa took down “The Natural Born Killer” down early in the second round, and he passed to side control and applied an unorthodox one armed kimura in 56 seconds of the second round.

Light heavyweight contender Corey Anderson won a unanimous decision over Ilir Latifi, and Alexander Volkanovski scored a huge win over former title contender Chad Mendes.  Both fighters were rocked with heavy punches, and Volkanovski had to escape Mendes’ rear naked choke attempt. However, he was able to finish the fight with punches at 4:14 of the second round by TKO, giving him his 16th straight win.

Preliminary Bouts: Hall Submits Penn

In the featured Preliminary Bout, Walt Harris was able to stagger former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski multiple times to win by split decision 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 (for Arlovski).  Also in the prelims, former Invicta Fighting Champion Megan Anderson defeated Cat Zingano with a toe to eye head kick in the first round which resulted in an eye injury which Zingano could not recover from to continue the fight.    Former Absolute Championship Berkut champion Petr Yan defeated Douglas Silva de Andrade by stoppage in the second round after reigning down punches and elbows. He has now won 6 fights in a row.

For grappling fans, Ultimate Fighter 22 winner and grappling sensation, Ryan Hall became the first fighter to submit former 2 division UFC Champion (Lightweight and Welterweight) BJ Penn with an amazing rolling heel hook in 2:46 of the first round.  This was the first time he had been submitted in 31 fights.
