In this video John Danaher explores a core preliminary of the straight jacket system and back attacks in general, left right control. If someone is able to turn into you, the dominant position of back mount is lost. John starts off with the seatbelt harness around his training partner. He has one arm under and one arm over his opponent’s shoulder. He states that most people believe that control from this position is achieved by locking your hands together. Danaher states that this is not the object of control. Rather control is gained from the elbows. With one elbow over and one elbow under your opponent’s shoulder movement should be impaired. Next John explores diagonal control. If we have control with our elbow and hook on one side then it is very easy to escape. However, if we have an elbow and one hook on opposite sides then control can still be maintained. It is amazing how much better my back control has improved from watching this short video. Thank you John Danaher.
This video is a wonderful example of John’s ability to communicate technique to even novice grapplers. Like all of Danaher’s instructional videos, there is a lot of detail. I know that I gain new insights every time I re-watch one of his videos. Beyond technique, his instructional videos also serve as an education on the principals of grappling and thinking in systems.
