In the end, it was Mayssa Bastos, who came out on top with a first round win over Fabiana Jorge in overtime, a kneebar submission over Fiona Watson in the Quarterfinals, a face crank/submission over Rikako Yuasa in the semifinals, and defeating Pati Fontes, in the overtime of the finals to win the inaugural EBI Strawweight Championship.

Background of Mayssa Bastos

Mayssa Bastos was born on October 23, 1997, in Niteroi, a city in southeast Brazil.  She began training BJJ in 2009, at the age of 12 years old- starting with coach Jair Court.  She quickly fell in love with the sport and began competing in numerous competitions- becoming a IBJJF Juvenile World Champion in 2014 as a blue belt, and a IBJJF World Champion in 2015 and 2016 as a purple belt.  As a brown belt, she got 3rd place at the IBJJF Worlds (2017) and 2nd place in 2018. Additionally, she won the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Grand Slam as a brown belt. Bastos received her black belt from GF Team coach Julio Cesar on June 4, 2018, as she was standing on the podium of the IBJJF World Championships.

Besides now winning the EBI Strawweights Champhionships, since becoming a black belt, Bastos has won the IBJJF Asian Open, IBJJF Pan No-Gi, CBJJ Braileiro No-Gi, UAEJJF Grand Slam Tokyo, UAEJJF Grand Slam Rio de Janeiro, and the IBJJF American Nationals.
