Here is a video of Mike Palladino demonstrating what he calls the “kick start back take.” Watch the video then we will break down the technique. Check it out!
Mike starts off the kick start back take from side control against his opponent who is in the turtle position. The key detail here is to use your heel of your foot the rip up your opponent’s leg so you can take his back and sink your hooks in. This is a great way to take the back. Palladino also demonstrates how to take the back using a roll through. Here is knee is right right in between his opponent’s knees. He is hip to hip and then goes to his harness, picks the leg and rolls all the way through. In that transition is where you want to look for the setup for a submission. Mike gives some really cool advice right here, “I always want to try to catch a submission in the midst of the battle.”
The next time your opponent turtles give this kick start back take a try! It is a great way to break their defense down and get a fast submission from the back.
The turtle position is a powerful dominating position, but can be very difficult to finish. Many grapplers are starting to favor the turtle position to escape and defend against a variety of submission attempts. Mike Pallidino is a master at opening his opponent up in the turtle position and hitting them with just about every submission. His DVD / On Demand series called Killer Turtle Attacks will make you a master at finishing from this position. A MUST have for wrestlers and takedown oriented grapplers.
