Sport Jiu Jitsu in MMA: Korean Zombie Fight Night Breakdown

Posted by Fanatics Authors on

The argument continues to be fought on a daily basis even today. Is modern Sport Jiu Jitsu effective in a real fight? Has it maintained its original purpose? Or has it been watered down to the point of uselessness?

This past weekend in Greenville South Carolina, the Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung finished Renato Moicano with a spectacular 1st Round TKO in just 58 seconds. The match started off with a few feeler strikes being put out there by both sides. Then Jung dipped under a Moicano lead hook and countered back with a massive right hook of his own that sent Moicano to the mat. The shot would be the beginning of the end for Moicano.

Once hitting the mat Jung put on an amazing display of one of the primary principles that Sport Jiu Jitsu was founded on. Positional control in order to cause damage with strikes. It's part of what the IBJJF point system is based on. The more damage you can cause with strikes from a specific position, the more points you earn when you obtain it. It's a principle that is sometimes forgotten with the appeal of a submission. The glitz and glamour of Sub Only events as well as the submission highlights of Instagram can make positional control seem dull and boring. While from a spectator's point of view that can be true, that in no way means that positional control is ineffective.

On the mat Jung quickly passed Moicano's guard to obtain mount. But in Moicano's haste, he almost instantly rolled and gave up his back in order to escape the mount position. That would be the last mistake Moicano made in the match. From there, Jung secured the back position with hooks and applied pressure both with the hooks and to the back of Moicano's head to break him down flat. Jung then proceeded to rain down heavy strikes until Moicano was no longer defending himself and the referee was forced to step in.

The concept of striking while maintaining positional control is not only one of the founding principles of Jiu Jitsu, it's also one of the first widely used successful principles of MMA in general. In the original days of MMA it was a tactic adopted by all grapplers. Grapplers with backgrounds in Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, and Catch Wrestling, all made the transition to add striking into their grappling style. Jiu Jitsu's advantage is that it's one of the few sports were its point system is based on this principle. Thus the positions are already trained regularly and there's almost no need for modification in order to add strikes.

By breaking Moicano down flat with an immense amount of hip pressure, he was able to put himself in a position where he could both maintain control as well as deliver devastating strikes. The pressure is created by using your hooks to press your hips forward while simultaneously arching your back. Doing so keeps your opponents hips pinned to the mat while also giving you the space needed to strike with rotational force. This generates far more force than simple arm punches are capable of.

So if you've ever entertained the idea of transitioning into MMA, or if you train Jiu Jitsu for the purpose of self defense. Always remember the old adage of position before submission. It's more than just something old timers say.
