In this video Travis Stevens explores some of the uses of C grips. He states that the value of a C grip is not in controlling your opponent. However, there are several effective uses for this grip. One use is guiding your opponent's arms. An example of this is in butterfly guard. We can use C grips to create the space and angles necessary for an arm drag. Stevens notes C grips are also great for offensive movement. Often times they can be used to set up a submission like a Kimura. A third use of C grips in in escapes. They are excellent for pushing our opponent’s away in order to create sufficient space to escape. At the end of the video Stevens reiterates that the purpose of C grips is not to hold our opponent in a static position, they are a valuable addition to any grappler’s arsenal. Certainly all gripping should be done with a purpose and it is nice to have the benefits and weakness of any grip defined. Thank you Travis Stevens.
This video is a wonderful example of Travis’s ability to communicate technique to even novice grapplers. Like all of Stevens’ instructional videos, there is a lot of detail. I know that I often gain new insights every time I re-watch one of his videos. Travis Stevens’ instructional videos have a powerful impact on anyone who makes a careful study of them. Certainly, the Jiu Jitsu community is lucky to have him.
