You can wear white after Labor Day, but not a black belt !

Labor day is upon us, signaling the end of summer to a lot of people, and we enter the time of year between pool parties and cookouts and holiday celebrations. If you need something to look forward to this month, get ready for BJJ Fanatics Brown Belt Invitational on September 6, 2019 at 6pm! The inaugural event will showcase brown belts and below in an open weight division tournament with the king himself, Gordon Ryan, making a guest appearance as a commentator.

The action will be available to stream live and FREE on multiple media sites, such as Facebook and Youtube. Without the presence of black belts in the tournament, the chance to see how technically advanced these upcoming stars are is an amazing opportunity. Competitors will be vying for the chance to film dvd tutorials for fellow fanatics, so make sure you watch to see if your favorite grappler will be releasing new material soon! 

A few members of the Renzo Gracie team have been invited and confirmed, such as Pierre-Olivier Leclerc, Ryan McCartney, Nicky Rodriguez, Nick Ronan, and Isaak Michell. They each bring a unique style and approach to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which will definitely bring forth some exciting matches during the tournament. 

 

Pierre-Olivier Leclerc is a Canadian purple belt out of Tristar gym with a very offensive style, admitting himself that his style is “..all about hunting for submissions, with technical intensity”. Ryan McCartney is a more observational grappler and prefers to study his opponent before attacking, saying he likes to “become familiar with patterns and sequences so the next step towards the finish is always clear and in sight”. 

Nicky Rodriguez is no doubt someone to watch out for, as he takes the Jiu Jitsu community by storm at the beginning of his career. He is currently doing amazing things on the mat and is determined to take his opponents down and take their backs quickly. Nick Ronan will bring his multifunctional movements to the mat as well;he is often thought of as a leg locker, but is also adept at takedowns and chokes. Isaak Michell will represent Australia with his admitted “relentless” approach to the game. His young age will certainly not change his determination and skill amongst the other competitors once on the mat. 

This particular format is bound to be a great opportunity to visualize members of the brazilian jiu jitsu community that are currently on the pathway to receiving their black belt. Removing that elite class provides a completely different grappling atmosphere, which will allow lower belts to compete against each other and assess themselves amongst peers. Other confirmed grapplers that are on the card include James Banville from 10th planet, whose strategy differs from others in that he plans to play aggressive and flashy “because girls think it’s cool”- which is true, so can you blame him? Kyle Boehm will also be representing 10th planet, but he brings a physical and mental mindset of heading into war. Rounding out the 10th planet team will be Chase Hannah;he aims to go forward with a “clear mind and a streamlined strategy” and Andrew Alexander. 

Multiple other high level competitors from a variety of schools will be present and bringing their best game, so be sure to stay tuned to learn the updates on the tournament details!
