Who is Jake Shields?

Jake Shields is an American MMA fighter who was born on January 9, 1979. Jake Shields grew up near Mountain Ranch, California, in the Sierra Nevada. His martial arts journey began when he was 9 when he began amateur wrestling. Shields was a four year varsity wrestler and state qualifier in high school. He even finished 2nd place at the Amateur Athletic Union National Freestyle Championships.

He was also a two-time junior college All-American wrestler during his time in college. Jake Shields started to train MMA in 1999 when he joined Chuck Liddell's SLO Kickboxing Academy. After just a few weeks Shields competed in his first MMA match having to fill in for a teammate who was injured. 

After that fight in 2001 Jake Shields decided that he wanted to make a career out of MMA. He then went on to train at the Cesar Gracie Fight Team and went on to develop some pretty impressive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills. Then went on to win several high level BJJ championships.

Jake Shields eventually went on to become the head BJJ and MMA instructor at Fairtex-Gracie San Francisco. Jake Shields has even developed his own style of grappling that he calls American Jiu-Jitsu. Jake Shields’ Fight List

Jake Shields’ first fight was on October 23, 1999 at CFF: The Cobra Qualifier 1999 against Paul Harrison. Jake Shields won that fight by a TKO via punches. He then fought in small promotions throughout the United States before signing with EliteXC in 2007. 

Jake Shields had his first fight with the promotion at EliteXC: Uprising on September 15, 2007 against Renato Verissimo. Jake Shields won that match via TKO using punches and elbows. Two months later at EliteXC: Renegade Jake Shields beat Mike Pyle using a rear naked choke. 

In his next fight Jake Shields took on Nick Thompson at  EliteXC: Unfinished Business and beat Thompson in the first round with a guillotine. Jake then went on to defend the belt against Paul Daley.

Jake Shields then went on to compete for Strikeforce at Middleweight and in his second fight in the promotion he won the inaugural Strikeforce Middleweight title in a fight against Jason Miller.  Jake Shields then defended the title against Dan Henderson before vacating the title and making the move to the UFC.

For his UFC debut, Jake Shields returned to Welterweight, winning his debut against Martin Kampmann by a split decision. For his next fight Jake Shields challenged for the UFC Welterweight championship against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129. Jake Shields lost the match via a unanimous decision. Jake then fought his next 6 fights UFC before eventually moving to the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) 

Jake Shields made his debut with the organization against Ryan Ford at WSOF 14. Jake Shields won that fight via rear-naked choke. After winning his next fight against Brain Foster, Jake Shields made two consecutive shots at the WSOF Welterweight title, coming up short both times against Rousimar Palhares and Jon Fitch. 

Jake Shields then stayed with the WSOF as it transitioned into the Professional Fighters League (PFL). His first fight after the rebrand was against Danny Davis Jr. at PFL: Everett, winning by unanimous decision. Jake Shields then went on to lose to Ray Cooper III via TKO at PFL 3 before beating Herman Terrado by unanimous decision at PFL 6.

In his most recent bout Jake Shields lost a rematch to Ray Cooper III by TKO again at PFL 10 in October of 2018.

Jake Shields's Best Fight of All Time

Jake Shields has had a ton of amazing fights but his best might be his match against Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields in 2009. The performance by shields in the fight was masterful. After weathering some big shots from the powerful Lawler, Jake was able to pull guard and complete a guillotine choke less than half way into the first round of fight.
