WHAT IS A JIU JITSU DUMMY

A Jiu Jitsu dummy, or otherwise known as a grappling dummy is a padded bag much like a boxing bag just in the shape of a man, which is used to practise many different Martial Arts techniques. A grappling dummy can be used for a multitude of different training regimes, as students have been known to throw heavy grappling dummies to the ground, so they can simulate takedowns, or throws. Other students will use a grappling dummy to practise many of the intricate grappling systems like leg lock entanglements, or other submission flow chains.

best jiu jitsu grappling dummy

The significance of a grappling dummy can be extremely important to an athlete that trains from home, as they may be unable to find another person to train with. A grappling dummy is a great way to practise many of the techniques that a student will learn. Grappling dummies have no feelings, and don't get upset if a student is too rough, instead students can be quite vicious toward their grappling dummy, as they can really snap on submissions at a highly dynamic pace. Training against real opposition can force a student to wear the best bjj ear guard, but when they use a grappling dummy, ear protection is no longer needed. This is a great tool to use if a student is practising for high level competition, the only downside to training with a grappling dummy is the fact that the dummy does not fight back. In most cases every technique that a student will utilise will be countered by their opponent, or at least attempted. So even though grappling dummies are a great asset to have in a student's home gym, it is not the be all that ends all.

CAN A STUDENT IMPROVE, TRAINING WITH A GRAPPLING DUMMY

There are many ways to improve on an athletes game with the use of a grappling dummy. A good training method is to use the dummy as a part of their circuit training, this means lifting the dummy up, carrying it across the mats, and throwing it into the mats. This can be an exhausting workout if the athlete puts in a high volume of repetition. The most common use for the grappling dummy is to practise different sequences of movements, like passing its guard, moving into control positions, and setting up submissions. One of the greatest aspects about using a grappling dummy is that a student can move as fast as they want, or strangle it as hard as they want,  they can also implement a series of strikes if MMA is their poison. Using a grappling dummy can be one of the best ways for a student to practise their transitions, because when they do so on a real life person, using too much pressure may force them to go easy. Transitioning on top of a grappling dummy means students can use as much pressure through their knee ride, while forcing themself between the mount, around side control, and into north south without fear of neck cranking their opponents. The grappling dummy is one of the best tools that a student can use, especially when they have built their own gym, and are training from home.

There is only so many moves a student can practise on a training partner before they need a break, this is not the case with a grappling dummy. Students can use a grappling dummy for as long as it takes, and the dummy won't complain. The other great aspect about wrapping a grappling dummy up in a Gi is that a student can explore concepts, and create their own variants, because becoming good at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all about creativity, and how the student can develop their own pathway into progression.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN GRAPPLING DUMMY

There are many different ways to make a grappling dummy from scratch. Some practitioners will simply put a zip up hoodie over a teddy bear, add in rolled up towels, and tie them all together with a Gi, and a belt. Even though this may simulate a grappling dummy, and have some significance towards training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there are better methods available. To make an extremely sturdy grappling dummy a practitioner will need a few different items. Most athletes that have a home gym have equipment laying around, and the perfect equipment to simulate a chest is a Muay Thai kick shield. Focus mitts can also be used to simulate shoulders, and hips, as well as a head. Pool noodles can also be used to simulate a spine, arms, and legs, and once a student has all of these pieces of equipment together, they can use rolls of duct tape to piece together their very own grappling dummy. Once a student is happy with the sturdiness of the dummy, they can then add a BJJ Gi over the top, to make the dummy more lifelike. This can be used by women too, as they will look to add the best women's bjj gi to the exterior of the homemade grappling dummy.
