Cyborg Biography

Cristiane Justino Venancio, “Cyborg” was born on July 9, 1985 in Curitiba, Brazil.  She is the current UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion, the former Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion, as well as the former Invicta FV World Featherweight Champion.  Cyborg’s first major publicized fight when she defeated Gina Carano for the Strikeforce title on August 15, 2009 by first round technical knock-out (TKO).

Cyborg grew up wanting to play handball, a sport she discovered at the age of 12.  However, when she was in college, at 19 years old, a black belt from the famous MMA school Chute Boxe (produced champions such as Vanderlei Silva, Anderson Silva, Shogun Rua) saw her play handball and asked if she would like to fight Muay Thai.  Three months later, Cris took her first fight, and fell in love with the sport.

Women’s MMA Awards

Through Cyborg’s storied MMA career, she has won the 2013, 2010, and 2009 Featherweight of the Year, 2011 Female Fan Favorite of the Year, and 2009 Headline of the Year (with Gina Carano for their bout in Strikeforce).   Sports Illustrated also voted her the 2009 Female Fighter of the Year.
