Amanda Nunes In The UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship Bout

UFC 232  Co Main Event: Women’s Featherweight Championship Bout

This past weekend, UFC 232, held at the Forum in Inglewood, California, featured the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship bout between former champion Jon Jones and former title challenger Alexander Gustafsson.  The Co Main event of the will be the UFC Women’s Featherweight (136 to 145 lbs) Championship bout between current champion Cris Cyborg (also former Strikeforce and Invicta FC Featherweight Champion) versus current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion (126 to 135 lbs) Amanda Nunes.  If Amanda wins, this will be the first time a woman has been champion of two weight divisions simultaneously, and the third fighter overall (after Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier).

Amanda Nunes Biography

Amanda was born on May 30, 1988 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.  At the age of four, she started taking Karate, and then pursued boxing when she was 16 years old.  A few years later, she began taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lessons when she was invited by her sister to train with her.  

Amanda made her mixed martial arts (MMA) debut on March 8, 2008 at Prima MMA Championship 2, held in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, where she was defeated by Ana Maria by armbar submission in the first round.  However, Amanda would rebound, winning her next five fights by knock out.

She made her Strikeforce debut on January 7, 2011 at Strikeforce Challengers: Woodley vs Saffiedine in Nashville, Tennessee where she defeated Julia Budd by knockout in 14 seconds of the first round.  

UFC Career

Amanda made her UFC debut against Sheila Gaff at UFC 163 on August 3, 2013 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.  She won the fight via TKO in the first round. After winning her next fight against Germain de Randamie by TKO (elbow strikes) in the first round, she lost to Cat Zingano by TKO in UFC 178 on September 27, 2014.  Since that loss, Amanda has won 7 in a row, including defeating Miesha Tate for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship title on July 9, 2016 at UFC 200 by submission (rear-naked choke) and by defeating MMA superstar Ronda Rousey for her first title defense at UFC 207.  Nunes won this fight via TKO by punches in just 48 seconds of the first round.
