High Crotch Single Leg by Yuri Simoes

Who is Yuri Simoes? He is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Ricardo Vieira. Yuri is widely regarded as one of the greatest grapplers in modern grappling. Simoes began making waves in the lower ranks of Jiu Jitsu with wins in the IBJJF Mundial, World No-Gi Championship, and European Open.  He has continued his brilliant career as a black belt. He is a two time ADCC Champion. Yuri also has claimed multiple time IBJJF World Champions. During the course of his career he has overcome injury and adversity to bring glory to the Caio Terra BJJ in the world’s most prestigious tournaments.

At the age of 9, Simoes was introduced to Jiu Jitsu by his father.  One of Yuri’s first instructors was Mauricio Behring. When Behring was tragically murdered in 2006, Yuri was able conquer his grief and eventually started to train under Ricardo Vieira. It was under Ricardo’s careful tutelage that Yuri earned his purple, brown and black belts. Eventually Simoes would move to Caio Terra’s association.

Yuri has an impressive grappling resume. He is the 2015 and 2017 ADCC Champion. In 2009 and 2011 he won the IBJJF World Champion for purple and brown belts.  He took gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Champion in 2011 at brown belt then in 2014 and 2016 at black belt.  Simoes had an impressive showing IBJJF Pan American Champion by taking gold in 2012 and 2014. His accomplishments at lower ranks are also amazing.  In 2010 and 2011 he won the IBJJF European Open for purple and brown belt respectively. As a junior, he won the IBJJF South American Champion.

Yuri Simoes has a secret formula in no gi grappling that has not only allowed him to take down and pass the best guards in the world but simultaneously shutdown the best leg attack games.

In addition to his impressive grappling performances, he is also a hugely talented and sought after instructor. He travels the world conducting seminars. Additionally, his instructional videos for BJJ Fanatics are hugely successful.

In this video Yuri Simoes explores the high crotch single.  He starts the sequence with the inside tie.  He likes to go around his opponent’s arms with fingers on their triceps. He opts for a thumb less grip as it gives him a lot of control. Next Simoes steps all the way around. If he is attacking on his right side his left leg goes first. With the left leg in positon his right legs steps past his opponent’s leg line. His hands are clasped around his opponent’s leg. However his head position is different than a single leg. His head is on his opponent’s chest. He notes that if one opts for the single leg he does not want to stay in the single leg position with your head on your opponent’s leg. To finish the high crotch he drives his legs around his opponent in a circle while pushing their body to the ground with his head and shoulder.

This video is a wonderful example of Yuri’s ability to communicate technique to even novice grapplers.  Like all of Simoes’ instructional videos, there is a lot of detail. I know that I often gain new insights every time I re-watch one of his videos. Yuri Simoes’ instructional videos have a powerful impact on anyone who makes a careful study of them. Certainly, the Jiu Jitsu community is lucky to have him.

Yuri has faced the best of the best and been able to implement his game on almost everyone. Yuri Simoes has finally revealed his tried and true methods in his news series High Efficiency No Gi Jiu Jitsu: Top Game and it will accelerate your No Gi game tenfold!
