RESULTS! - Bellator 216: MVP vs. Daley

,

Bellator 216 took place on February 16, 2019 at the Mohegan Sun arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.  This event was "part two" of a two day event, where Bellator held back to back events at the Mohegan Sun.  The first event, Bellator 215, was headlined by Matt Mitrione versus Sergei Kharitonov, which unfortunately ended in a no contest when Sergei took an accidental kick to the groin in just 15 seconds into Round 1 which left him unable to continue.

The main event will for Bellator 216 was a quarter-final round bout in the Bellator Welterweight World Grand Prix between Michael Page and Paul Daley.  The main event was a close fight, as all three judges scored it 48-47 for Michael Page, keeping his undefeated record of 14-0 intact. While this bout was supposed to be a thrilling stand up battle between the two knockout artists, Paul Daley surprised everyone by going for takedowns and trying to maintain top position.  He was able to take down Page a few times during the fight, however Page was also able to reverse him, and even was able to take his back in the fifth round, looking for a rear-naked choke. With Page's victory, he will now face former Bellator Titleholder Douglas Lima in the semifinals of the Bellator Welterweight World Grand Prix, who defeated Andrey Koreshkov  at Bellator 206 in September 2018. On the other side of the Grand Prix bracket, the winner of Jon Fitch - author of Combat Tested Takedowns - versus Rory McDonald which takes on April 27, will take on Neiman Gracie, who defeated Ed Ruth at Bellator 213 in December 2018 by rear naked choke in the fourth round.

Co-Main Event: Cro Cop versus Roy Nelson

In the heavyweight co-main event, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, the 2006 Pride Fighting Champions open weight grand prix winner, used his great takedown defense to stifle Roy Nelson's repeated takedowns.  This fight was a rematch of their October 2011 bout, where Roy defeated Cro Cop by TKO punches in the third round at UFC 137- Penn Vs. Diaz. In this fight, Cro Cop was also able to land some effective kicks throughout the match, but much of it was spent in the clinch along the cage, as Nelson, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, tried to take him down.  Cro Cop was able to stop these attempts, and punish Nelson with uppercuts, elbows, and knee strikes.

All three judges scored the fight in favor for Cro Cop- 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28, extending his present winning streak to 10 fights.

In other fights, Cheick Kongo defeated Vitaly Minakov by unanimous decision.  This was a rematch of their April 2014 fight, where Vitaly won a unanimous decision over Kongo at Bellator 115.  The fight was largely spent on the feet, with Vitaly pressing forward, and Kongo dodging his blows and effectively counter striking.  With this win, Kongo has now won 8 consecutive victories.
