BJ Penn’s  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Career:

BJ Penn was born on December 13, 1978 in Kailua, Hawaii.  In his early teens, BJ started training with a neighbor, Tom Callos, who was a student of Ralph and Cesar Gracie (and step father to BJJ star Keenan Cornelius).   BJ fell in love with BJJ and decided to move to California to train with Ralph Gracie in 1997. BJ stayed with Ralph until he received his purple belt. He later ended up training at the Nova Uniao headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he trained under the watchful eye of BJJ legend Andre Pederneiras  with BJJ stars such as Leo Santos, Robson Moura, and Shaolin Ribeiro. While training at Nova Uniao, BJ became the first American born to win the IBJJF World Championships in 2000- defeating Alexandre Soca by points in the Quarterfinals, Fredson Alves by points in the Semi Finals, and Edson Diniz by armbar in the finals.

BJ’s rise to black belt world champion was one of the fastest ever, as he received his black belt in less than 4 years (3 years and 4 months).  After his world title, BJ began focusing on fighting MMA

BJ Penn’s MMA Career:
