In the Lightweight division, former UFC Lightweight and Welterweight champion, BJ Penn, will be facing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu star and 6-1 MMA fighter, Ryan Hall.
BJ Penn’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Career:
BJ Penn was born on December 13, 1978 in Kailua, Hawaii. In his early teens, BJ started training with a neighbor, Tom Callos, who was a student of Ralph and Cesar Gracie (and step father to BJJ star Keenan Cornelius). BJ fell in love with BJJ and decided to move to California to train with Ralph Gracie in 1997. BJ stayed with Ralph until he received his purple belt. He later ended up training at the Nova Uniao headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he trained under the watchful eye of BJJ legend Andre Pederneiras with BJJ stars such as Leo Santos, Robson Moura, and Shaolin Ribeiro. While training at Nova Uniao, BJ became the first American born to win the IBJJF World Championships in 2000- defeating Alexandre Soca by points in the Quarterfinals, Fredson Alves by points in the Semi Finals, and Edson Diniz by armbar in the finals.
BJ’s rise to black belt world champion was one of the fastest ever, as he received his black belt in less than 4 years (3 years and 4 months). After his world title, BJ began focusing on fighting MMA
BJ Penn’s MMA Career:
BJ is one of the greatest Lightweight fighters in MMA history and was inducted in the UFC Hall of Fame in 2015. He made his mixed martial arts debut with the UFC on May 24, 2001, with a TKO win over Joey Gilbert at UFC 31. He then proceeded to beat Din Thomas and Caol Uno, before suffering a decision loss in a championship fight against UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver.

He later defeated Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 on January 19, 2008 to win the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship belt by rear naked choke in the second round. He then made three successful title defenses, defeating Sean Sherk (TKO by flying knee and punches), Kenny Florian by rear naked choke submission, and Diego Sanchez, by TKO, before losing a controversial decision to Frankie Edgar at UFC 112 on April 10, 2010.
