The High Elbow Guillotine With John Danaher
As we start looking at the details of the high elbow guillotine, the first myth Professor John Danaher notes is that flexibility is a must in order to do this move effectively.
The reality is flexibility only plays a very small part in the ability to do a successful high elbow guillotine. A lot of practitioners use flexibility as an excuse as to why the technique wont work, more likely, we are likely just missing a detail or two. Check out the video below!
Starting off we get our choking arm in and use our hand to cup the chin and control the head. Using the shoulder of that arm we drive forward and twist slightly creating space between the opponent's’ shoulder and our chest on the opposite side of the choking hand. Creating this space is imperative to success with the high elbow guillotine because the opponent wants to drive into us and start working to pass over our legs to get out of danger.

Once this space is created, we are able to insert our support hand, knuckles facing the opponent and cupping your choking hand and your elbow should be pointed up towards the ceiling. The other key here is hand position. Once you secure the grip the next battle is to get your hands in the space between your opponents’ neck and shoulder.
Now that we have our grip and our hand position correct, we can bring our elbow pointed up and ensure that the opponent cannot cover our arm and prevent us from finishing the submission.
