Ashley McKenzie is a world class and Olympic Judo practitioner, who trains and competes for Great Britain. Ashley has won numerous Gold medals along his journey, from Pan American Championships to World Cup titles, including a Commonwealth Games Gold. Ashley is also a five time British Champion winning titles at the British open including a three peat from 2008 till 2010.

In 2010 Ashley McKenzie competed at the U23 European Championships where he achieved first place securing the Gold medal. He backed up the next year by winning the World Cup Judo title in Poland. Later that year he won another World Cup and European Gold, competing in the UK and Germany respectively.

On August 15, 2012 Ashley McKenzie would be selected to appear on the 10th season of Celebrity Big Brother. The charismatic Ashely McKenzie would capture the hearts of the nation, where they voted for him as he reached the finals. 24 days after arriving at the Big Brother compound he would end up finishing in 5th place. Ashley spoke about how much fun it was and one of his career highlights.

In 2013 Ashley would travel to Budapest where he finished third at the European Championships. Later that year he would achieve another great tournament win by placing 1st at the Pan American Open in Uruguay.

2014 was a stand out year for Ashley as he travelled back to Uruguay and won Gold at the Pan American Open. Later that year he would achieve a longlife dream by winning Gold at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

The next 5 years of competition for Ashley was up and down as he became the British Champion once again in 2015. He went on to win Silver and two bronze medals at the IJF Grand Slam in 2015,2016 and 2018. He also won a string of Silver and Bronze medals at the IJF Grand Prix in places like; Antalya, Zagreb, Cancun, Perth and The Hague. He also won another Bronze medal at the European Championships in Tel Aviv in 2018.

In 2020 Ashley McKenzie once again appeared on the big screen, this time he was selected to be on the 11th series of Ex On The Beach in the UK.

Ashley has also represented Great Britain in the 2012 London, 2016 Rio De Janeiro and the 2021 Tokyo Olympic games. He did not medal in any of his appearances, with his last event he was beaten in the first round. Ashley McKenzie was disappointed with the Tokyo games and as a 32 year old that may have been his last chance at Olympic Gold.

Ashley McKenzie was born in Queens Park in London on the 17th of July in 1989. He is currently 32 years of age.

Ashley McKenzie’s Family!

Ashley McKenzie grew up in London with his family, but before he began in martial arts his start to life was incredibly hard. At the age of only 18 months Ashley had heart problems and was forced into having an operation on his heart. This was a troubling time for his parents as they struggled with this near death experience. Ashley recovered from his operation and grew up with a bundle of problems. Ashley was diagnosed to have ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) he also had problems that caused him to have seizures and he had trouble hearing and was forced to wear a hearing aid. With all of Ashley’s problems, going to school would be extremely difficult. He got himself in trouble a lot and had the reputation of a bad boy, after being expelled from school Ashley’s parents were forced to send him to a special school for his behavioral problems. Ashley was seeking attention like most children suffering from ADHD, and by the age of 11 had found Judo by an unlikely source. 

Ashley had had an altercation with another boy on the streets of West London, where this boy tried to steal his Pokemon card. As they tussled the boy threw Ashley over his shoulder and into the pavement numerous times, before making off with his prized Pokeman card. That night Ashley remembered thinking about how he was throwing me, so he searched the internet and before long realised it was a Judo maneuver. Ashley then joined his local Judo academy where he found the boy who robbed him, they became friends and Ashley got his Pokemon card back. 

As Ashley started to train in the art of Judo, the structure and excitement of training and competing helped Ashley focus his behaviour. This helped Ashley find a pathway towards a better future, Ashley has maintained that Judo saved his life.

To this day Ashley is now in a relationship with fellow Judoka Automne Pavia, and 3 years ago they welcomed their daughter Lana-Rose into the world.

Ashley McKenzie has won many great fights including World cups, European titles, Pan American titles and British titles. His long life dream to win Olympic Gold still alludes to the 32 year old British competitor. The next best thing to Olympic Gold is certainly Commonwealth Games Gold. In 2014 at the Commonwealth games in Scotland Ashley achieved that feat. After defeating Neuso Sigauque from Mozambique in the sem final, Ashley went on to win Gold by upstaging India’s Navjot Chana.

Ashley McKenzie has lost his share Judo bouts in his career, but none worse than his most recent Olympic campaign. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics Ashley McKenzie was hopeful of winning himself his first Olympic medal. He put a lot of hard work into his training to prepare for the event. In his first fight he took on Karamat Huseynov from Azerbaijan, Ashley was outwitted and outmuscled losing to Karamat and he was eliminated from the competition. A devastated Ashley had to be consoled as he burst into tears, claiming he wanted to go home. Ashley said in his interview “I’m sorry Mum, no one wanted to watch me lose in that fashion”. A dejected Ashley counted this as his worst loss to date.

Ashley McKenzie has a Judo record of 220 wins with 137 losses giving him a 61.6% win ratio overall in his career. His best year came in 2010 when he won 26 out of 36 fights with a win percentage of 72%

Ashley McKenzie’s Injuries!

Ashley McKenzie has been fighting his mental injuries his whole life, as a diagnosed ADHD sufferer with seizures, it has been an ongoing struggle for Ashley. He also suffered heart problems as a child, along with a hearing impairment. 

Ashley has also had some minor struggles with soft tissue injuries over the years, but he has been significantly good at recovery.

Is Ashley McKenzie Retired?

Ashley McKenzie is still a very active Judo competitor, even at the age of 32 Ashley still endeavours to win Olympic Gold. After his last defeat at the Tokyo Olympics many thought his career would be over, but the British athlete still maintains he is training hard and looking for retribution when he takes the mats in Paris in the 2024 Olympic games.
