More About Paul Tom’s Career

Paul Tom has essentially been training in martial arts for his whole life. He started by learning basic fighting and self defense tactics from his father who served as an Army Ranger during the Korean conflict. By the time he turned 14 he had begun training karate with a black belt who was a Sgt. in the Army. They got special permission to train twice a week on the cement floor in the armory. He continued training with his twice a week for the next 3 years until football, girls, and being a teenager took precedence at the age of 17.

He moved to Utah in 1984 and was unable to find a martial arts academy that provided the type of training he was used to, so he gave up on training for a period of time. His father mentioned to him that he should start training Jiu Jitsu if he was able to find an academy.

In the early 1990’s Paul and his friends began to catch wind of Royce Gracie and all that he was doing in the UFC. Around that time he had some friends that had been training Jiu Jitsu, but he grew sick of hearing about it. One night during an argument with an acquaintance who trained Jiu Jitsu, Paul became angry and picked the guy up and slammed him on the ground with the goal of holding him down until he was able to calm himself. This went on for about 15 minutes and he realized he was not doing a great job at holding this guy down. Three days later he walked into a Rickson GracieJiu Jitsu Pedro Sauer academy and paid for a year of training, promising himself no one would ever do that to him again.

Thus his training began in 1995. After years of training at this academy, he left over a business dispute. He had just purchased a school and was in a large amount of debt. As a brown belt at the time, he called professor Rob Handley who connected him with Grandmaster Flavio Behring. Flavio told him that he would put Paul and his school under his wing as long as he displayed the right attitude and respect for Helio Gracie Jiu Jitsu. He did, and has been loyal to that promise while running his academy ever since.

Paul’s favorite aspect of Jiu Jitsu is the self defense aspect. He appreciates all of the other areas it has flourished in such as MMA, sport Jiu Jitsu, and no gi grappling, but his focus is the pure Helio Gracie Jiu Jitsu that is centered in self defense. He does teach for gi and no gi competition, but also sees it as still training for real life situations.

His primary goal in Jiu Jitsu is to continue to evolve in a way where he is as effective as possible. Through years of beating up his body, he strives for longevity. When he began training Gracie Jiu Jitsu, it was nowhere near as popular in the US as it is now. He believes that the evolution of Jiu Jitsu has grown so much that you can meet someone who trains no matter where you go in the world.

Having been a Jiu Jitsu teacher for over 20 years, Paul has been inducted into the Martial arts hall of fame and has received various other awards while receiving attention from multiple media outlets due to her expertise in the art.
