Romulo Barral Biography

Romulo Barral was born on May 3, 1983 in Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais – Brazil. Like all young men, Romulo was addicted to all martial arts films. He first started off with Tae Kwon Do at 8 years old, and continued to train in the Korean Martial Art and eventually earning him a black belt at the age of 19 ... which is also when he stopped training TKD;but his early studies gave him a lot for the martial arts that has never stopped.

Romulo had a growing interest for MMA, but recognized that the Tae Kwon Do skills he had did not work with in the cage alone. He needed to learn jiu-jitsu.

Romulo started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the prestigious Gracie Barra BH at the age of 15. His first coaches were Cristiano Lazzarini and the famous Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhaes.

Draculino was a powerful and ferocious BJJ black belt, and Romulo first started training at Gracie Barra to become a MMA fighter. He achieved his dream by fighting his first fight in 2004 in the Arena BH where Romulo Barral submitted Fabiano Fabiano via Rear Naked Choke.

Romulo fought one more time in 2009 with another win via RNC, but decided to focus competing in BJJ and submission grappling rather than continue his path in MMA.

Interview: No More Sacrifices

The popularity of Jiu-Jitsu was beginning to really rise and there were good opportunities for competing in top level tournaments such as ADCC and IBJJF Worlds. He is know as one of the top grapplers in the world, who believed in training all variations of jiu-jitsu, including gi training for MMA!

In 2005 Romulo Barral was awarded his black belt by Draculino. While he was a solid competitor at the purple and brown belt level, he truly became a world-class jiu jitsu athlete after he started competing as a black belt.

Romulo started competing almost immediately after getting his black belt. Only months after being awarded his black belt, be fought and won against some of the top grapplers in the world - including Saulo Ribeiro, Xande Ribeiro, Rafael Lovato, and others. In 2007 these wins earned him the gold medal in the IBJJF Worlds 88kg division and silver in absolutes. Romulo Barral has arrived... and is not considered one of the toughest competitors in the world.

He took a brief break in 2008, but came back in 2009 by winning both the IBJJF No Gi and Gi Worlds, and a silver in Pan Ams,

He would forgo competition in 2008, after such a successful yet tough and stressful competition run in 2008. In 2009 he was reinvigorated for competition and won both the IBJJF World Championship in Gi and No-gi, as well as taking home a silver in the Pan Ams.... AND fighting his last MMA fight! Quite a year...

Romulo has continued to compete and is now a 10x world champion, including 5 black belt world championships in the medium-heavy division, 2013 ADCC champion, and a NO GI world champion.

In 2011 he opened his Gracie Barra school in Northridge CA. There he has some of the top competitors and instructors in the world, including Edwin Najmi, sharing their love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including a thriving kids program!

Many high profile MMA fighters have sought out Romulo to help their Jiu-Jitsu, most famous being King Mo, Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Dan Henderson. Romulo has always believed in the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu for the mats, the cage and street.
