Alexandre Ribeiro, also known as “Xande Ribeiro'' is a world famous Brazilian Jiu Jitsu professor and competitor. The veteran Xande, has lit up the world stage in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 20 years. His illustrious career has seen him win 5 World Championships in the Heavyweight division, 2 World Championships in the absolute division and 3 World Pro division championships as a black belt.

Xande started his journey into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when he was only 10 years old under the watchful eye of the Monteiro brothers, Guto, Binho, Yano and Lucio. Xande quickly rose through the ranks and developed a talent for competition, as it is reported that Xande only lost 2 matches in competition in his first 7 years as a grappler. 

In 1999 Xande moved to Rio De Janeiro as an 18 year old, where he began studying for a law degree. Xande joined Gracie Humaita, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Rio De Janeiro, run by Royler Gracie. Xande would now train alongside the famous Brazilian, his brother Saulo Ribeiro who was already a competitive superstar. During the first two years of training at Gracie Humaita, Xande would win two World Championships and two Pan American titles, putting himself on the radar of serious Jiu Jitsu competitors. 

Xande Ribeiro received his black belt in March in 2001 in a ceremony led by his own brother, the esteemed Saulo Ribeiro. In 2002 Xande moved to Ohio in the United States and lived there for 5 years before moving to SanDiego, California with his brother. The two brothers founded the University Of Jiu Jitsu, an academy dedicated to sharing knowledge between all students of Jiu Jitsu. Their academy became world famous for its new concept of bringing students from all academies together as one. The pair later founded Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu Association which is now revered as one of the world's top academies. 

Xande is world renowned for his unpassable guard which is a concept that he has developed. The formidable grappler has only had his guard passed twice ever in his competitive history as a black belt. Once to Roger Gracie and once to Braulio Estima back in 2005. Xande Ribeiro also boasts an incredible record of never being mounted in competition.

Xande Ribeiro was born in Manaus Amazonas in Brazil on the 20th of January in 1981. This year Xande Ribeiro celebrated his 40th birthday.

Growing up in the Amazon in Brazil was an exuberant time for the Ribeiro family. A place filled with fun, festivals and excitement was naturally an exciting place to live in the heart of Brazil. Xande and his older brother Saulo, who is 7 years his senior, were inspired by the love of family, culture and sports. Xande’s father was an extremely strong figure in his life who pushed him as a young boy to achieve greatness. His mother, who is well known for having the heart of the lion, gave birth to these two warriors. As they grew from young boys into the extremely talented professional men they are today, it is safe to say it all came from their love of their family and their extremely rich culture as Brazilians.

He has competed in the heavyweight, absolute and super heavyweight divisions. His fight list includes phenomenal fighters like;Jeff Monson, Erik Paulson, Dean Lister, Roger Gracie, Marcello Garcia, Damien Maia, Braulio Estima, Robert Drysdale, Andre Galvao, Keenan Cornelius, Leandro Lo, Felipe Pena, Gordon Ryan and Craig Jones. Xande has beaten the best of the best and his induction into the Hall of Fame is extremely well deserved.

Xande Ribeiro’s Best Fight Of All Time!

Xande Ribeiro has had so many amazing victories in his esteemed career, it is almost impossible to single out one that is his best. In 2006 he beat Roger Gracie in the final of the World Championships, winning the world title by an advantage. Two years later he took on Roger Gracie again in the 2008 final at the world championships, this time up staging Roger 4 points to 2 winning the world title yet again. 

One of Xande’s best fights would come in 2007 in the ADCC World Championships. He took on Robert Drysdale in the semi final defeating the world renowned grappler on points advancing himself into the final. Xande would win the ADCC Gold by defeating the formidable Braulio Estima by points in a hard fought match. 

Who Did Xande Ribeiro Lose To?

Xande Ribeiro has had some incredibly close losses in his career including defeats to;Pablo Popvitch, Romulo Barral, David Avellan and Roger Gracie. Xande has also lost to Bernardo Faria 2 - 0 on points in 2010 in the World Championship final. In 2016 Xande lost 2 - 0 in the final of the Grand Slam RJ against Felipe Pena. Xande also lost to the No Gi king Gordon Ryan in the semi final of the 2017 ADCC World titles by a referee decision.

Xande Ribeiro has an incredible fight record as a black belt of 162 wins and 42 losses. Xande has had 79 submission wins as a black belt and incredibly he has only been submitted 6 times since 2001 including 3 times by Roger Gracie.

Xande Ribeiro’s Injuries!

Xande Ribeiro has spent some time on the sidelines with injuries. He was injured twice in competition, first against Jefferson Moura in 2002 in the quarter finals of the world championship. Secondly against Braulio Estima in the 2009 ADCC final. 

Is Xande Ribeiro Retired?

After losing to Felipe Pena in the quarter finals in the 2018 World Championships, the world was struck by the gripping covid 19 pandemic putting a halt on a lot of professional competition. Xande Ribeiro thought about retirement from the professional circuit. Since then he decided to compete in the Fight to Win promotion defeating Gabriel Almeida by an armbar in 2020, and more recently defeating Fellipe Trovo by a referee decision in 2021.
