Who Is Fabio Gurgel?

Fabio Gurgel is a 7th degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Red and Black Belt, who is widely considered as one of the best practitioners of his generation. Fabio has won numerous titles including 4 World Championships, 4 Brazilian National Championships, 3 European Championships and 2 Pan American championships.

Fabio Gurgel took his first Jiu Jitsu class at the age of 13, and by 1986 at the age of 16 he was awarded his Purple belt by his coach and mentor Romero Cavalcanti. By 1988 Fabio was a Brown Belt and he opened his own academy in Rio De Janeiro. He tore through the divisions as a brown belt winning everything there was to win, including “The Lighting Bolt Cup” and “The Copa Company” and by 1989 the phenomenal grappler was honoured by being awarded his Black Belt.

In 1991 Fabio competed in the world famous Jiu Jitsu vs Luta Livre challenge. He fought Luta Livre fighter Denison Maia, finishing him easily in the first round by way of TKO from the mount position. 2 years later Fabio teamed up with Black Belts Romero Cavalcanti, Alexandre Paiva and his brother Fernando Gurgel to open what would soon become one of the best teams in the world, in Alliance Jiu Jitsu.

In 1994 Fabio Gurgel moved to São Paulo where he opened his own branch of Alliance Jiu Jitsu. He then went on to win the first ever Brazilian National Championship under its new CBJJ title. Fabio won more crowns including another CBJJ title and the inaugural Mundial World Championships. He also competed in MMA and Vale Tudo where he would eventually lose the final to a formidable Mark Kerr.

Fabio continued to win more World Championships as his trophy cabinet began to shine. By 2002 Fabio was involved in a controversial Jiu Jitsu federation split as a new federation emerged (CBJJO) luring fighters to the new organisation to fight for prize money. Gurgel had a difference of opinion in how the federation should be run causing animosity between the organisations.

As the years went by Fabio and the Alliance Jiu Jitsu team would re-emerge as a formidable competition team. Fabio Gurgel would raise over 50 world champions including talents like;Rubens Charles, Lucas Lepri, Bernardo Faria, Marcelo Garcia and Gabrielle Garcia. 

Fabio Gurgel would never lose his hunger to compete as he kept winning titles, and at the age of 40 he won another European Championship. In 2020 Fabio Gurgel was awarded his 7th degree Red and Black belt in Jiu Jitsu.

Fabio Gurgel was born in Rio De Janeiro on January the 18th in 1970. Today Fabio is 51 years of age and has been a Black Belt for 32 years.

Fabio Gurgel’s family originally hailed from Sao Paulo in Brazil, and in 1970 his Father, Mother and Brother moved to Rio De Janeiro where they gave birth to Fabio. As Fabio and his brother Fernando grew, their parents encouraged them to be active and get involved in sports. In 1983 Fabio found Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and only a few months later his brother Fernando joined him, as they both went through the ranks and became formidable black belts and co-founders of Alliance Jiu Jitsu.

He has also fought in 5 MMA/Vale Tudo fights against;Jerry Bohlander, Denilson Maia, Patrick Smith, Michael Pacholik and Mark Kerr. 

Fabio Gurgel’s Best Fight Of All Time!

Fabio Gurgel has been involved in some incredible fights in his career, winning numerous World and Brazilian titles. Defeating Ricardo Arona in the Mundial World Championship in 2000 and Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros in the Mundial World Championship in 2001. 

One of his best wins though would come later in his career at the age of 40, where he would prove to the world that he would always be a champion. In 2010 He would win the European Championship in Lisbon Portugal, going up against his own student Bernardo Faria who won everything that year (His weight group and the absolute at the Pan Americans, the absolute at the Brazilian Nationals, the World Championships and the Brazilian Team Nationals) Fabio Gurgel would defeat Bernardo Fario for the 2010 European Title. This was an epic win for Fabio Gurgel at age 40 adding yet another medal to his extremely full cabinet.

Who Did Fabio Gurgel Lose To?

Fabio Gurgel beat everyone there was to beat from his generation in Jiu Jitsu. So he had a taste of MMA losing to Jerry Bohlander at UFC 11 by a decision on September 20 1996. 4 months later Fabio would enter The World Vale Tudo Championship 3, a Vale Tudo Grand Prix which was a no holds barred event that allowed stomps to grounded opponents, headbutts and bare knuckles. Fabio made short work of Patrick Smith, securing a TKO in 50 seconds. His next fight lasted nearly 5 minutes before Fabio finished Michael Pacholik with another TKO. In the final Fabio would take on the huge American Mark Kerr in a battle that lasted the full 30 minutes. Fabio would lose a unanimous decision as the American broke both his hands, ground and pounding on Fabio’s head. The fight was an epic bloody battle that was revered by the fight world.

There are no reports about Fabio Gurgel having any significant injuries throughout his career. Although he did take a battering in his famous loss to Mar Kerr, Fabio recovered quickly and went on to keep winning titles.

Is Fabio Gurgel Retired?

Fabio Gurgel has had a successful career in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and at the age of 51 he has retired from competing on the world stage. He continues to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and still coaches great fighters, and helps them develop their skills in martial arts. Many of his students from Alliance Jiu Jitsu have gone on to win World Championships, as a result of Fabio Gurgel’s expert knowledge of the fight game.
