More About Marcos Tinoco’s Career
Born in the Araruama state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the end of 1988, Marcos started training Jiu Jitsu at the age of 16 under Master Juarez Soares, himself a student of the legendary coach Monir Salomao. As a part of Araruama Jiu Jitsu which was founded by Juarez Soares, Tinoco found himself a part of a competition driven team that was being led by one of the best coaches in the area. It didn't take Marcos too long in this environment to become a competitor himself, and soon he began winning a large number of local and statewide tournaments.
As his success in competition continued, he continued to search for tougher tournaments to improve his goals and start climbing the ladder to the top. With the help of a gracious teammate, Tinoco was able to put together the funds to travel to the US to compete in the Pan American Championship as a purple belt. Following the tournament he accepted an offer from Eder Perciliano to stay in the US and work as a coach.
During the 2012 World Pro Championship of 2012 in Abu Dhabi, Marcos met his future wife Hana, who worked for a Marcelo Garcia affiliate in Memphis. She pushed for Marcos to go train with Marcelo and after a few training sessions with him at the Marcelo Garcia Headquarters, Marcos made the decision to switch teams and train with Marcelo in 2013. He has full permission from his former instructor Soares.
The transition to training under Marcelo Garcia and his team really allowed Marcos’ Jiu Jitsu to blossom, and shortly after brought him to his world title in 2014. After one of his best years of competition, Marcos received his black belt from Marcelo Garcia in January 2015. He had the opportunity to receive his black belt on the same day as one of his high level teammates, Jonathan Satava.
