More About Marcelo Cohen’s Career

Marcelo Cohen was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and began his career in martial arts with Judo at the age of 9. He was an extremely active kid so this discipline was extremely beneficial to him and he practiced it for many years. As he got older he began to desire a more self defense oriented and challenging martial art, in during his mid teens he began training at the Carlson Gracie Academy headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he also met head coach Marcelo Saporito.

Marcelo moved to the United States in 2004. He moved to Jupiter, Florida where he picked up his training at the well known academy, The Armory. Here he trained with several professional fighters including Kurt Pellegrino, Eduardo Guedes, and others. He kept close with his head coach Marcelo Saporito back in Rio de Janeiro, who he eventually earned his black belt from in December 2012.

Later on Marcelo became a head coach at The Armory, where other instructors such as Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida, Raphael Chaves, and Rodrigo Cavaca had done before him. Due to a combination of his success in competition and that of his coaching skills, he had received praise by a ton of different Jiu Jitsu outlets over the years. Marcelo has competed in Jiu Jitsu and combat Jiu Jitsu.  He has competed in numerous different promotions and organizations such as IBJJF, Fight To Win, and many others. 

While describing his game, Marcelo's states that the guard he plays is a mixture of closed and rubber guard, and he uses a combination of Kimura, tripod, and old man sweeps from these positions. He favors the toreando, baseball sliding pass, and the Kimura trap to pass the guard, and naturally his favorite submission is the Kimura.
