Nick was born in Clayton, New Jersey and he began his wrestling career at the age of 12. While wrestling for Clayton High School Nick qualified for NJSIAA championships during his senior year. His success caught the attention of several colleges, and Nick began wrestling for Ferrum College’s program in Virginia. He spent one year training and competing at Ferrum and then decided to pursue a career in modeling while beginning his daily Jiu Jitsu training with instructor Jay Regalbuto in 2018.
His skill in Jiu Jitsu quickly started to shine and he was competing within 3 weeks of training with Jay. With all of his succes Nick decided to make a run at the ADCC USA East Coast Trials. While preparing for trials Nick met Gordon Ryan, and the rest was history.

Between high school and the time Nick went to wrestle in college, he gained 50 pounds bulking up from 170 to 220. He ended his collegiate wrestling career after not qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a record of 32-4. After switching to Jiu Jitsu full time, Nick did briefly return to wrestling in October 2019 to face US World Team Member Pat Downey at a Who’s Number One superfight. Nick lost the match by tech fall.
Rodriguez originally started training Jiu Jitsu in 2018 as a way to stay fit, but after just a few weeks of training he attended his first competition where he won the advanced 230 pounds and absolute brackets. Just a few months after this he made the move to the Renzo Gracie academy to train with John Danaher.
While getting ready for an ADCC run, Nicky Rod was introduced to Gordon Ryan. He had his first private lesson with Gordon in October 2018, and Gordon immediately recognized his potential and invited him to come train in the Danaher Death Squad Room. Nick began making the trek to visit the DDS twice per week while he was getting ready for the ADCC Trials.
During his first year in Jiu Jitsu in 2018 Nick failed to qualify for the ADCC’s, but he competed at the IBJJF World Championship at blue belt and submitted all of his opponents to claim the championship.
By 2019 he had been awarded his blue belt. This year he did qualify for the 2019 ADCC World Championships after winning the North American Trials. As a blue belt he made it all the way to the finals after defeating 3 extremely high level black belts;Mahamd Aly, Orlando Sanchez, and Cyborg Abreu. However, Rodriguez was defeated in the finals by IBJJF Black Belt World Champion Kaynan Duarte by points, making Nicky the runner up of the tournament.
2020 was a slower year for everyone including Nick Rodruguez due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year he claimed a bronze medal at the KASAI Pro 7, and was set to face 2019 US World Team Member Pat Downey as a sort of rematch using a special ruleset, but the event was canceled due to COVID.
More recently, John Danaher announced that the Danaher Death squad would be splitting up, but many of the competitors would continue to train together. Shortly after, Nicky released a statement that he would continue to train among some of his DDS partners, such as Nicky Ryan, Craig Jones, and Ethan Crelinstein. The group calls themselves the “B-Team” and will be training out of Austin, Texas.

As a blue belt competing on the biggest stage in the World, he was able to defeat Cyborg who is one of the most well known black belts in modern day Jiu Jitsu.
