The Miyao Brothers Biography

The Miyao brothers were born on May 11th, 1991, in Parana, Brazil. They were the sons of a farmer and his housewife and third-generation Japanese descendants. The brothers began their martial arts training in Judo, finding Jiu-Jitsu later at the age of 16. Their first instructor was Adriano Carvalho. Adriano saw potential in the twins and encouraged them to train and compete more regularly. With the encouragement of their instructor, the two brothers wanted to become professional Jiu-Jitsu competitors. Against the wishes of their parents, Joao and Paulo would both move to Sao Paulo to pursue their dream of fighting professionally, eventually becoming integral members of the Jiu-Jitsu team.

It was here in Sao Paulo that the two Miyao brothers would find their home at PSLPB or Projeto Social Lutando Pelo Bem (Fighting for Good Social Project), run by Cicero Costha. This was a project that brought many high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors together, such as Mauricio Cristo and Leandro Lo. While living at the academy with many other fighters hungry for success, the Miyao brothers started winning many championships. The media soon picked up on the two brothers after their continued success in the absolute divisions weighing in at only 64 kilos. They were known for having sharp guard skills and the ability to medal consistently, including effective sweeps. This attention from the media earned them sponsorships to travel around the world and showcase their skills at the highest level of competition. The Miyao brothers both received their black belt together during June of the year 2013.
