After just 4 years of training, Rafael Cordeiro received his Black belt in Muay Thai from the Chute Boxe Academy and at 17 years old he began competing professionally in both Muay Thai and MMA. After retiring from competition in 1999, Rafael Cordeiro put his energy into coaching athletes.

Rafael Cordeiro trained fighters out of Chute Boxe Academy in Brazil until he moved to the United States in 2008. In 2010, Rafael Cordeiro opened up his own gym in Huntington Beach, California, called Kings MMA, where he has trained top-tier fighters ever since.

Rafael Cordeiro’s fight list begins in August 1993 where he fought a man listed as Daniel Daniel at CP X CB - Capoeira vs. Chute Boxe. Rafael Cordeiro won the match via TKO due to a cut. 

Rafael Cordeiro took his next fight 2 fights 3 years later in August of 1996 at the BVF 4 - Circuito de Lutas 7 tournament. Rafael Cordeiro beat both of his opponents, Cosminho da Silva and Altair de Oliveira in the first round using a rear-naked choke.

Rafael Cordeiro’s next fight took place two years after the tournament at IVC 7 - The New Champions on August 23, 1998. Rafael Cordeiro’s opponent was Sergio Melo and Cordeiro lost that match by DQ for grabbing the ropes. 

Rafael Cordeiro then went on to win the IVC Lightweight Championship in his next fight at IVC 9 - The Revenge against Henry Matamoros. Rafael Cordeiro won the match via unanimous decision. 

Rafael Cordeiro took his last fight at VTJ 1999 - Vale Tudo Japan 1999 on December 11, 1999. The match was against Rumina Sato and Rafael Cordeiro lost the match in the first round by a kneebar submission.

Rafael Cordeiro’s best fight is probably the one that he had against Henry Matamoros at IVC 9 - The Revenge. This is the fight where Rafael Corderio won the Won IVC Lightweight Championship. 

In the fight, Rafael Cordeiro was very aggressive and pushed the pace on his opponent. Rafael Cordeiro was able to mix together striking, clinching, takedowns all with a ton of aggression. The entire fight was basically just Rafael Corderio overwhelming his opponent and not giving him a chance to step forward at all or even breathe. Rafael Corderio even dominated from the top position, despite him mainly being known for his Muay Thai striking prowess. Ultimately this aggression and dominating performance did not finish his opponent but it did earn Rafael Cordeiro the one and only MMA championship on his record.

Who Has Rafael Cordeiro Trained?

Rafael Cordeiro has been training fighters for over two decades and with how good he is at it he’s obviously had some big names that he’s worked with. 

Rafael Cordeiro has  most notably worked with a ton of top tier Brazilian MMA fighters, like former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, former UFC Heavyweight champion and 2005 Pride Middleweight grand prix winner Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. 

Rafael Cordeiro has also worked with potentially the greatest fighter of all time, former UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Other Brazilian fighters that Rafael Cordeiro has worked with includes Former UFC Lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, former UFC women’s Featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and Former PRIDE Middleweight Champion and the 2003 PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix Tournament Champion Wanderlei Silva.

Rafael Cordeiro also currently works with top UFC Middleweights Marvin Vettori and Kelvin Gastelum.
