What this article covers

Tarik Hopstock was born in the mid-90s in Oslo, a major Norwegian population center and place of culture. He first found his way to martial arts through Judo which he approached as a teenager at a local Judo club. Even though he loved training in Judo, there was only one class offered each week and this was not enough for the ambitious Tarik Hopstock. After spending some time looking around for a gym that had more class offerings, Tarik Hopstock eventually found the Frontline Academy.

Excited at the opportunity to train as often as he wanted, Tarik Hopstock instantly left his Judo Academy to join the Frontline team. It was at Frontline where Tarik Hopstock fell in love with Jiu Jitsu and also met his instructor Eduardo rios. Rios himself has one of the purest Jiu-Jitsu lineages of all time having received his black belt from Ricardo Liborio, one of Carlson Gracie's original students.

Throughout his career, Tarik Hopstock has frequently referred to Eduardo Rios as both an inspiration and a mentor who has helped him achieve incredible heights in the sport. Rios picked up on Tarik Hopstock's skill very early, noticing that he was ready for adult classes even as a child. Being thrown in with the much larger bodies of the adult classes helped Tarik Hopstock's Game grow immensely. Faced with much larger opponents, he was also forced to develop a modified version of the traditional omoplata called the Tarikoplata that would still be effective on much larger opponents.

When interviewed about the creation of his signature move, he directly referred to his small size in relation to the people he was training with. He found himself unable to finish kimoras or omoplatas from the top and often found himself moving off the position or changing to a different submission. After some creativity, he decided to modify and advance the technical aspects of the existing omoplata rather than learning an entirely new move. However, he didn't dare call it the “Tarikoplata” until he had already hit it multiple times in competition.

Still, tasked with trying to select one of Tarik Hopstock's brightest moments - we'd go with his 2023 quarterfinals victory against Bradley Schneider in the IBJJF London Open during the Absolutes. Although Schneider worked hard to get something going, he was completely unable to contend with Tarik Hopstock's devastating style. The match ended with an incredibly dominant score of 22-0 - a shutout by points in favor of Tarik Hopstock. This surely stood out as one of his most dominant victories in his entire career, especially as a black belt.

Who Did Tarik Hopstock Lose To?

As he's climbed to the ranks, Tarik Hopstock has had to face much more difficult black belt competition. He also challenged himself by going up in weight nearly 30 pounds to face one of the greatest heavyweight Grapplers around, Roberto Jimenez.
