Who is Thamires Aquino?

Thamires Aquino is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt athlete who has cemented her place as one of the top female competitors of her generation. With a passion for martial arts that began at a young age, Thamires has dedicated countless hours to mastering the techniques and strategies of jiu-jitsu, training under the tutelage of Master Júlio César Pereira.

What this article covers:

At the age of 11 Thamires was introduced to capoeira, a Brazilian martial art specialized in kicking, which Aquino did for a few years. As a 14-year-old, she started visiting her mom’s gym, where there were also jiu jitsu classes. This was the first time Thamires had access to grappling.

Interested in finding what jiu-jitsu was about, Thamires decided to do a trial class and immediately felt ‘at home’ on the mats. Her first coach at this academy was André Ricardo da Silva, commonly known by the jiu-jitsu community as “Garapa”.

Thamires started attending jiu-jitsu classes at her mom's gym, where she felt at home on the mats from the very beginning. Her first coach was André Ricardo da Silva, who awarded her the blue belt. It was at this point that Thamires began to compete in jiu-jitsu tournaments and discovered her talent for the sport.

To further develop her potential, Thamires moved to Cia Paulista's headquarters, where she trained under Max Trombini, Garapa's head coach. It was Max who awarded Thamires her purple belt. However, Thamires sought an even stronger team and moved to Rio de Janeiro to train at GF Team's headquarters in Meyer.

It was at GF Team that Thamires earned both her brown belt in June 2015 and her black belt in June 2016. As soon as she earned her black belt, Thamires hit the ground running, winning two important titles in her first six months: the South American Championship and the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam - Rio de Janeiro.

Thamires' talent, discipline, and dedication to the sport have earned her a reputation as one of the top female competitors of her generation. She continues to inspire others to pursue their dreams with the same level of passion and commitment she has shown throughout her jiu-jitsu journey.

Competing for the renowned GF Team (GFT), Thamires has had an impressive run on the international circuit, earning several important titles that have placed her among the elite in the sport. Her skill, discipline, and dedication have been on full display at events such as the IBJJF World Championship, where she has gone toe-to-toe with some of the world's most formidable jiu-jitsu practitioners.

In addition to her success at the IBJJF World Championship, Thamires has also distinguished herself at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour – Rio de Janeiro. Her victories in these prestigious tournaments have earned her a reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the world of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

As if Thamires' success in the sport wasn't impressive enough, she is also the twin sister of another prolific jiu-jitsu competitor, Jhenifer Aquino. The two sisters share a deep love and respect for the art of jiu-jitsu, and their dedication to the sport has brought them both great success. Together, Thamires and Jhenifer represent a powerful force in the world of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, inspiring others to pursue their dreams with the same level of passion and commitment.
