Thiago Alves Fight List
After moving to the US to train, with a fight record of 8-3 Thiago received an invitation to fight in the UFC. He made his UFC debut at Ultimate Fight Night 2 against fellow UFC fighter Spencer Fisher. His debut fight took place on his twenty-second birthday, and after having success early on in the fight he lost by a triangle choke late in the second round.
However, Thiago returned to his next fight at UFC 56 strong and determined, and defeated the previously undefeated Ansar Chalangov by TKO at 2:25 in the first round.
Thiago continued to rack up wins, including an extremely impressive performance at his next fight at UFC 59 against Derrick Noble. In their last bout, Derrick submitted Thiago by a rear naked choke. Noble began the fight strong with a flurry of punches causing Alves to spend most of his time covering up to protect himself. As Noble rushed in looking to capitalize, Alves caught him with a perfectly timed counter, dropping him and declaring Alves winner by TKO.
Thiago jumped into his career with the UFC with full force as he had 4 fights during the year 2006. He showed yet another dominant performance at UFC 66 where he dominated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt DeSouza with a second round knockout due to a knee. After this fight he faced some difficulties and was forced to step back from competition for a brief period, but returned in full force.
His first fight back was against Japanese fighter Kuniyoshi Hironaka at UFC Fight Night 11, where he won by knockout with a punch and a knee in the second round. With all the success Thiago had been having, he kept earning himself fights against top level contenders. His next fight was against UFC veteran Chris Lytle which panned out to be an extremely exciting and action packed fight that was eventually stopped due to a severe cut above the eye of Lytle, resulting in a win by doctor stoppage for Alves.
As he continued to rise in the ranks, his success caught the attention of Matt Hughes who Thiago agreed to fight. A sprained ankle before the fight affected Thiago’s ability to cut weight and ended up weighing in 4 pounds overweight for the bout. Regardless, Matt Hughes agreed to go on with the fight. Thiago shocked the crowd who heavily favored Hughes with a dominating performance. After picking Hughes apart while standing in the first round, Alves knocked him down with a flying knee and went on to finish the fight with a gruesome ground and pound early in the second round, winning by TKO stoppage.
The fight with Hughes set up a bout against Diego Sanchez at UFC 90, which many believe would be the match for the number one contender spot. However, Sanchez was forced to pull out of the fight just a few weeks prior due to an injury.
Four-time NCAA All-American wrestler Josh Koscheck stepped into Sanchez’s spot for the fight against Alves at UFC 90. Despite all of Koscheck’s grappling experience, Alves controlled most of the fight and won by unanimous decision. This is when the takedown defense and grappling abilities of Alves really began to shine, as he forced Koscheck into a kickboxing match. Alves’ leg kicks proved to be devastating during the fight by taking away much of Koscheck’s mobility. Alves was able to drop Koscheck numerous times throughout the fight, but Koscheck’s toughness and quick recovery enabled him to survive the 3 round bout.
After his impressive win against Koscheck, Alves was on a 7 win streak, also having won 9 of his past 10 bouts. This placed him in a position for a title shot against Georges St-Pierre in which he ultimately lost, but fought an excellent fight that is widely considered the best performance of his career.
After a brief leave of absence due to an injury in 2010, Alves came right back and beat John Howard at UFC 124, and has continued to have a successful career ever since.
