Brandon has been involved with 6 World Championship teams while competing for the USA in the art of grappling. Brandon has won 3 team world titles as well as 7 individual world championships. His extremely high level of Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu has seen him travel all over the world, competing in events like IBJJF, NAGA, FILA/UWW,SJJIF, Grapplers Quest, Pancrase and Catch Wrestling.

Brandon Ruiz has been wrestling since he was 15 years old and first stepped onto the wrestling mats when he attended Taylorsville high school. Entering college at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1994 in Utah in the United States, he wrestled collegiately and he was extremely successful, accepting All American honours on numerous occasions.

In 2005 Brandon Ruiz met Joey Johnson who had valuable insights into the psychology of martial arts. This is when Brandon read his book “Worthy To Win”, adopting the principles from Joey’s book, Brandon would adjust his training and focus on his conditioning. Brandon trained a lot wherever he could by running up parking lot stairs. Running sprints in the park, doing pullups and calisthenics in the playground. This new perception on how to win helped Brandon keep perspective, and he maintains it’s what helped him win the 2011 Grappling World Team Trials and beyond.

After losing in the FILA world championship in 2009 to teammate Kelly Anundson, this spurred Brandon Ruiz on to work harder to become a world champion. In 2011 he won the FILA World Title which he stated was a culmination of years of hard work and effort. He remembered laughing, crying and doing cartwheels because he was so happy.

Years of winning an incredible amount of titles and medals, Brandon Ruiz eventually settled into coaching. He has become a world class teacher and has trained many students from all walks of life including;Professional MMA Fighters, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competitors, Military Personal, S.W.A.T Personal as well as young and old Wrestlers. His students are well known for winning state and national titles, All American honours, International honours and he has produced two World Champions.

Brandon Ruiz grew up in Utah in the United States of America, he was born into an extremely supportive family. Growing up with the inspiration of God behind him he set out to achieve great things. Attending high school at Taylorsville he stepped onto the wrestling mats and never looked back. He graduated from high school in 1994.

From 1994 till 2003 Brandon Ruiz studied at Brigham Young University, where he went 4 years varsity and letterman with his achievements in sports. Graduating college in 2003, he struggled to afford his journey through martial arts on the international level. With the support of his Mother, Father, Grandfather, Grandmother and his coach Jeff Kunze, they all paid money to help Brandon on his journey. 

Brandon Ruiz is a happily married man, and although they suffered the loss of one of their children through a troubling pregnancy, they have a very happy family with their other children.

Brandon Ruiz has been involved in many great fights, including winning Jiu Jitsu world titles and Wrestling World Championships. Brandon, being the fighter he is, was never scared to take on anyone, and having trained and competed in many different organisations he was always up for the challenge. Brandon was well known as “The Strangler” and for good reason as he choked many of his opponents out on the canvas. 

During his catch wrestling fight with the Military veteran Jon Zang, Brandon Ruiz lived up to his nickname. Their match started with a furious exchange of tie ups and when the match hit the canvas, Brandon took his opponents back and locked in a chokehold. Jon Zang refused to tap out, causing the head referee David Elias to pull apart the fighters once he realised Zang was unconscious. As the fight was restarted Ruiz snared another takedown but Zang quickly rose to his feet. Jon Zang then secured his own takedown and took Brandon’s back, controlling him for the rest of the fight. Brandon Ruiz won the fight due to already securing a submission hold, but the American Ruiz was astounded by the focus and aggression Zang had brought to the fight. 

Who Did Brandon Ruiz Lose To?

Brandon Ruiz took on Curran Jacobs in the final of the 2018 Catch Wrestling World Championship. The match was proven to be an unforgettable event. Ruiz started off in great form, by securing many takedowns, Jacobs would prove to be a formidable opponent by escaping to his feet every time. Brandon also evaded all of Jacob's early takedown attempts, causing some frustration on the face of Jacobs. Both fighters had worn themselves down comprehensively, and by the end of the 5th round Jacobs looked like he was beaten. The 6th round began with the crowd expecting Ruiz to secure the win, but as the round went on Ruiz started to fade and Jacobs found a second wind. Jacobs neatly secured a takedown and then scrambled to take Brandon’s back, locking in a rear naked choke Jacobs secured the win and won the world title. The match was an historical event that firmly put Catch Wrestling back on the map and was established as the King of all Wrestling events.
