Brazilian JiuJitsu is a martial art thousands of people enjoy, although crime statistics show most JiuJitsu practitioners will never have to use their JiuJitsu skills in a self defense situation away from the mats. Therefore, the only time a JiuJitsu practitioner will likely use their grappling skills is in a BJJ tournament, or during "live rolls" at their academy. Although both of these situations can definitely be intense encounters, at the end of the day, Brazilian JiuJitsu is NOT LIFE OR DEATH for the overwhelming majority of practitioners.

Unfortunately, I am not lumped in the category of the "overwhelming majority" where Brazilian JiuJitsu is NOT LIFE OR DEATH," because over 18 years ago I began a career as a Law Enforcement Officer where the harsh reality is my career is often "LIFE OR DEATH." This is true because a police officer cannot lose a physical altercation because every encounter a police officer has with a subject there is always at least one gun involved, his own. This is why a police officer cannot lose a physical confrontation because if an officer is incapacitated, the subject can gain control of the officers gun, then kill the officer. This may sound over dramatic to some, but this is the cold hard reality of the Law Enforcement profession. Recent FBI statistics revealed 57,180 officers were assaulted in 2016, which breaks down to every 10 minutes an officer is assaulted. In 18 years as a police officer, I have been involved in dozens of physical altercations, the most recent being less than three weeks ago. Knowing the very high probability of being assaulted or worse, why would a police officer not seek out the most effective martial art to learn real world self defense? After all, his or her life will eventually depend on it.
For this reason I train Brazilian JiuJitsu because I believe BJJ is the most efficient martial art for real world self-defense. I believe this because BJJ focuses on managing the distance while standing, closing the distance, clinching the aggressor, then taking the subject to the ground where the BJJ practitioner establishes a position of dominance, which enables the Brazilian JiuJitsu practitioner the ability to control the aggressor while verbally negotiating with the subject.
So if Brazilian JiuJitsu is the most effective martial art to keep officers alive on the street, then naturally BJJ is the most effective martial art for the average citizen who trains for the scenario of possibly having to defend themselves or their family in a real world self defense situation.
