Bernardo rose through the ranks of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the watchful eye of the 5th Degree master Leo Vieira. Training under the precision of Leo Vieira helped Bernardo become a prolific grappler. Bernardo also learnt his coaching craft from Vieira as he had always been interested in teaching. Bernardo became close friends with Leo and Marcus Almeida who was one of his training partners. Bernardo was winning many fights at the coloured belt level as he was fast earning his promotions in Jiu Jitsu. After many appearances at highly prestigious tournaments, Bernardo was awarded his Black belt in 2011.

Bernardo spent years competing on the world stage of professional grappling. He was battle testing many of his favourite techniques like the lasso guard. Bernardo became masterful at his lasso guard set-ups where he developed exciting submissions like;the Lasso Plata where Bernardo uses the lapel to secure an Omoplata finish. He also executed submissions like the Armbar, Wristlock and Footlock all from the lasso guard. Along with these exciting submissions he would also develop various Lasso Sweeps that coexisted alongside various X guard techniques. Bernardo would later incorporate these world class setups into an instructional video format.

In 2014 Bernardo was attempting to become a World Champion as he was heavily involved with teaching classes at Checkmat in California. After being eliminated at the 2014 IBJJF World Championships, Bernardo was able to start his own Checkmat affiliation club in Hawaii. Bernardo was extremely excited to become one of 34 affiliated clubs to master Leo Vieira. Checkmat has clubs in 16 different countries and has raised some of the world's most comprehensive fighters to date. Bernardo would love the surroundings in Hawaii as he surfed and taught Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Bernardo has become one of Hawaii's premier coaches, as he continues to display his leadership towards his team. He is extremely passionate about Jiu Jitsu and passing on his knowledge and expertise is fast becoming his legacy.

Bernardo competed at the 2011 ADCC South American Trials, where he lost by a Rear Naked Choke to David Vieira. Bernardo also competed at the 2014 IBJJF World Championships. Bernardo was unfortunate as he drew the world class Felipe Pena in an elimination round. Bernardo fought well as he attempted to pass Felipe's guard, after two minutes of action Felipe managed to secure an Armbar submission. Bernardo was eliminated from the competition, as he earnt the respect of his opponent.
