David Groom first started to train in Judo at the young age of 7, however, in a funny twist of fate, David Groom hated the gentle art at first and quickly quit training. However, after two years away from the sport, David Groom would return to it to try out the art again and this time, David Groom would fall in love with it. 

After this David Groom would continue to train in the art and become one of Britain’s best competitors and went on to represent England and the Great Britain Team on the world stage. David Groom would also graduate from university with an Honours Degree in Physical Geography, which after attaining David Groom would be able to train full time 

In 2015, David Groom relocated to Sydney, Australia where he still trains but spends the majority of his time training and coaching students at the Zenbu Judo Club. David Groom also acts as the gym’s strength and conditioning coach and runs programs for the gym’s athletes, while still competing in Judo competitions on occasion. David Groom also started his website for Judo coaching and his podcast, The Judo Way of Life. 

David Groom currently holds a 3rd-degree black belt in Judo and he is also a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

David Groom started competing in Judo all the way back in 2004 when he was 16 years old. That year David Groom competed in his first-ever competition on the 4th of July in Rotterdam, the Netherlands at the European Cadet Championships.

At this competition, David Groom would win his first three matches before losing his fourth. David Groom would then come back and win in his fifth and final match at the event. 

David Groom competed again in 2005 however he would lose in his one and only match of the year. 

David Groom went on to compete all the way up to July of 2021 and have great success.

David Groom has lost to a fair number of big-name Judokas. The first person that David Groom ever lost to was Aleksander Makeev, a Russian Judoka that David Groom lost to at his first competition in 2004.  David Groom has also lost to Dmitry Dovgan, Tomas Knapek, Mihael Zgank and Stefan Samba.
