Who is Deron Winn?

Deron Winn was born June 13, 1989 in Liberty, Missouri.  As a high school student, he began wrestling for Liberty High School and became a three-time state champion for Missouri, compiling a wrestling record of 163-6.

After high school, Deron Winn matriculated to St. Louis Community College where he won the NJCAA Championship and earned the Outstanding Wrestler Award as a freshman.  As a sophomore he earned All-American status.

After his time at St. Louis Community College, he transferred in his senior year to Lindenwood University and their wrestling program.  There he earned NAIA All-American honors by placing third in the NAIA Wrestling Championships.

After his collegiate wrestling career, he began to focus on freestyle wrestling where he would compete nationally and internationally.  During his career, he was able to compile notable wins against elite-level wrestlers such as J'Den Cox and Pat Downey.  He was able to place at competitions like the US Open, the Pan American Championships and US World Team Trials.  In August of 2020, he wrestled Kollin Moore in Chael Sonnen's Wrestling Underground event.  This was after more than two years out of wrestling competition.  Deron Winn lost the match via decision.

Deron Winn has been able to build a mixed martial arts career based on his wrestling background.  He is currently signed to the UFC and fights in the middleweight division.  He has been a professional since 2017 and has also fought in the Bellator MMA organization.  Wrestling has long been seen as one of the best possible foundations for up and coming mixed martial artists.  Long-time commentator Joe Rogan has often said that being an accomplished wrestler helps a fighter dictate where the fight happens.

Deron Winn's  Fight List

After his successful collegiate wrestling career and focus on freestyle wrestling, Deron Winn attempted to make the 2016 Summer Olympics but was unsuccessful.  At this time, he made the decision to move to California to continue training mixed martial arts.  

In 2017 he became a professional and most notably fought under the Bellator MMA banner.  He was able to build an undefeated record of 5-0 with four of his five wins ending by knockout in the first round.  In December of 2018, he signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Deron Winn was slated to make his UFC debut against Markus Perez in June of 2019.  Perez would be forced out of the bout due to injury.  Perez would be replaced by Bruno Silva, only to have Silva pulled due to a USADA anti-doping violation.  Silva would be replaced by Eric Spicely.  Deron Winn was able to win by unanimous decision.  The two fighters also earned Fight of the Night award bonuses.

Deron Winn next faced Darren Stewart in October of 2019.  Unfortunately, Winn came in 2.5 lbs over the middleweight limit of 186 lbs.  The bout was then held at catchweight and he was fined 20% of his purse which was given to his opponent.  Deron Winn would lose the fight via split decision.

Deron Winn next faced Gerald Meerschaert in March of 2020 at UFC 248.  Deron Winn was defeated by submission in the third round.  He also incurred a 9 month submission and fine for testing positive for amphetamines.

Deron Winn was next slated to fight on December 19, 2020.  His original opponetn Antonio Braga Neto was removed from the card for undisclosed reasons.  Deron Winn was able to defeat the replacement Antonio Arroyo by unanimous decision.

Deron Winn is next scheduled to face Phil Hawes at UFC on ESPN 26 on July 17, 2021.
