Old School Judo by Garry St. Leger

St. Leger was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 24th, 1985 with his twin brother. He is 36 years old as of 2022. At Just 8 years old Garry and his brother started training Judo. He started training under Parnel Legros, the 1992 Judo Olympian. Garry has been training and competing at the highest of levels for the majority of his life. His competitions have taken him all around the United States and to countries such as Brazil, Japan, Venezuela and many more. All of Gary’s training and perseverance led him to become nationally and internationally ranked in the world of Judo. Garry became ranked number one in 2006 after winning his first national title. Shortly after in 2008, Garry was chosen to become an Olympic alternate for Beijing.

Shintaro Higashi has been a long time friend of Garry St. Leger’s since childhood, meeting at around 8 or 9 years old. Both being from New York, Garry from Brooklyn and Shintaro upstate Westchester they would see eachother every weekend at local Judo tournaments. They both remained close friends and competed on the US world team together. They currently both instruct together at Kano Martial Arts in New York where they have kids Judo, Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes. On the Kano Martial Arts website it states that the gym “was started with the intention of offering instruction led by people who have not only competed but have gained international recognition in the martial arts world.”

In an interview with JudoFanatics, Garry explains how he prefers to train and what ruleset he follows while on the mats. He mentions how much of a demand there is for learning stand up grappling by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners. He teaches some classes with both Judokas and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners. Communication is

imperative when it comes to 2 practitioners of the different sports mixing it up and training together. St. Leger, while teaching techniques he makes sure to discern what techniques are good for Judo and what are good specifically for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. There may be safety concerns when for example a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner goes for a leg of a Judoka. Modern Judo rules ban grabbing of the legs. During training when someone grabs a leg of Garry’s, he continues the training session and actually has fun with the different rule set. Garry welcomes rulesets different from the traditional modern style of Judo. Garry says that it is important for a Judoka to have an understanding of old school Judo, new school Judo and even an awareness for a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ground game especially if you are a school owner/instructor. Garry St. Leger credits martial arts to be therapeutic for him. Everytime Garry steps on the mats he lets his mind relax and focus solely on the task at hand while training.
