His jiu jitsu style is known for its captivating focus on submission techniques, drawing eyes from both media outlets and from fans of submission action.

Gutemberg Pereira, born on May 16, 1993, hails from Salvador, the capital of Bahia, a northeastern state in Brazil. He grew up in Jardim Cajazeiras, a well-known impoverished borough of the town.

During his childhood, Pereira was engaged in various sports-related extracurricular activities. His parents believed that keeping him occupied with sports would steer him away from the streets and away from any association with gang-related activities. Prior to discovering his passion for jiu-jitsu, Gutemberg played and competed in football (soccer), swimming, karate, muay Thai, and basketball.

As a teenager, Gutemberg faced a personal family challenge that deeply impacted him. To enhance his self-worth, he sought out jiu-jitsu and found a local academy called Fight Club (FC). Under the guidance of coaches Marcio Bittencourt, Marcílio, and Marcelo Villas-Boas, Gutemberg developed a love for Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a passion for competitive training.

While still a blue belt, Gutemberg journeyed to Rio de Janeiro with a special purpose—to compete at CBJJ's Rio International Open and meet his idol, Rodolfo Vieira. During his time there, Gutemberg approached Master Júlio César Pereira with a humble request to join his competitors' program at Grappling Fight Team (GF Team). Impressed by the 18-year-old's potential, Pereira welcomed Gutemberg into the team.

In 2015, Gutemberg traveled to the United States to participate in one of Roberto Abreu's BJJ camps based in Miami. While in Florida, he received an invitation to train at another GFT affiliate academy in Ohio, thanks to Abraham Marte, a GF Team partner. After an immensely positive experience at Kelly Hymore's academy, GF Team Toledo, Gutemberg decided to embrace the opportunity and became a full-time competitor, accepting the invitation to train in the US.

After spending two years in the US and achieving commendable results in top-level tournaments, Gutemberg Pereira's skill and dedication were acknowledged by Master Júlio César Pereira, who awarded him the prestigious black belt.

Since achieving black belt, he’s continued to compete on the international circuit in some of the toughest tournaments in the sport. He’s won the Abu Dhabi World Pro and the Abu Dhabi Grand Lam, as well as placing in many IBJJF events in the short, four year span since receiving his new rank from Julio Cesar.

Gutemberg Pereira competes against the very best in the jiu jitsu world at an international level. As a result, he’s certainly taken some losses to accompany his many medals and wins in the sport. If you have to have losses on your record, at least you’d want them to be legends, right? The list of opponents to beat Pereira at black belt is short, but it includes Keenan Cornelius, Leandro Lo, Lucas Barbosa, and Kaynan Duarte. 

There’s no shame in losing to names like these, and those losses have no doubt ignited the competitive fire that Pereira still has burning within him.
