What this article covers:

Born on May 13, 1992, in Vitória da Conquista, a city in Bahia, Brazil, Hiago Gama embraced the world of martial arts and combat sports from an early age. Starting with judo at the age of 5, Hiago pursued the sport until reaching the purple belt level.

The Snake Lasso Guard by Hiago Gama

In 2008, a friend named Daniel Ferraz extended an invitation for Hiago to visit a jiu jitsu academy. After enjoying the class immensely, Hiago decided to become a member, marking the beginning of his BJJ journey. Despite his family's strong connection to judo, particularly through his accomplished aunts Cátia and Cácia Gama, former Brazilian national medallists, Hiago gradually shifted his focus towards jiu jitsu.

Under the guidance of Gleison Oliveira, Hiago trained and progressed up to the blue belt level. In 2012, Alexandre Paiva, the leader of Alliance Leblon academy, initiated a project with the goal of identifying talented athletes in the colored belts division and nurturing their potential. Hiago was among the program's earliest participants and moved to Rio de Janeiro to embark on this exciting opportunity.

During his first year at Alliance Leblon, Hiago Gama achieved a remarkable feat by conquering the IBJJF Grand Slam. Emerging victorious in the Brazilian National, European Open, Pans, and World Championships, Hiago's success exemplified the effectiveness of Paiva's program.

Continuing his journey through the purple and brown belt stages, Hiago consistently displayed exceptional skill and commitment, securing world titles along the way. His dedication paid off in June 2017 when, while standing on the podium of the IBJJF World Championship that he had just won, Hiago Gama was promoted to the prestigious rank of black belt.

Now that he’s here, he’s here to stay. Hiago already has several medals from the Pan American Games, Worlds, and even a gold at the 2018 European Open to celebrate the receipt of his new black belt! We’re certain Hiago will continue to challenge the lighter weight classes with his devastating guard game for years to come.

In the meantime, don’t forget to check out his offerings through BJJ Fanatics! Gama is a shorter and smaller jiu jitsu player, so he’s ready with some tips for sweeping, controlling, and submitting off your back in sneaky ways. He’s got two instructionals that delve into this territory: “Dynamic Z Guard Attacks” and “The Snake Lasso Guard.” While Z guard may be familiar to many of us, we’re betting that less people have had a chance to channel their inner ophidia and master the Snake Lasso. Give it a try with this primer from rising star Hiago Gama.

Hiago Gama's Best Fight of All Time

Hiago Gama's greatest victory was actually a combination of victories at blue belt. In a single year, 2013, he emerged as the gold medalist in the four biggest events in the sport: the IBJJF World Jiu Jitsu Championships, the IBJJF Pan American Games, The IBJJF Brazilian Nationals, and the IBJJF European Open. This incredible run showed his impressive skills on a global scale. His outstanding performances in these events were a result of his hard work and talent, but more than that, they were a herald of the future. With this dominant string of performances, Hiago Gama became a name to watch. Four years later, he stood atop the European podium again, this time as a black belt.

Who Did Hiago Gama Lose To?

Hiago Gama competes against the very best in the jiu jitsu world at an international level. As a result, he’s certainly taken some losses to accompany his many medals and wins in the sport. Among those who have beaten Gama are Junny Ocasio, Livio Ribeiro, and Cleber Sousa - three of the very best that the game has to offer.

None of these losses stopped Gama- he continues to compete today as a black belt, now looking to repeat his unfathomable Grand Slam;this time, as a black belt.

Hiago Gama Record

Hiago Gama’s record in professional grappling competition, not including his runs at purple and brown belt, is 19-11. He’s comfortable playing the long, positional game and there have only been 7 submissions either way in his 30 matches. Five of those were his, meaning that he’s been tapped in competition as a black belt exactly twice in 6 years. That’s an impressive streak!

Hiago Gama Injuries

Hiago doesn’t have any major injuries that we’re aware of, and he hasn’t had significant periods of inactivity that would indicate a hidden injury. We suspect Gama has trained with careful focus and done his best to avoid injuries on the mat by supporting his BJJ routine with a dedicated strength and conditioning program to make sure he stays fit and uninjured.

Is Hiago Gama Retired?

Hiago isn’t retired;he’s dominating his division and competing in major international tournaments. He’s got results posted from late 2022 and will likely continue to compete in 2023 as well. Gama also has turned his focus to coaching and begun to give back to the BJJ community through his work with Fanatics.

He’s earned plenty of medals in competition and will continue to do so, but Gama has a passion for teaching as well. He’s worked with us to create two awesome products so far, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he’s got more in the chamber. Right now, both “The Snake Lasso Guard” and “Dynamic Z Guard Attacks” are both available in the BJJ Fanatics store.

In his first offering, “The Snake Lasso”, you’ll learn how to find and use this highly effective position that offers unique controls, sweeps, and submissions. Hiago, an expert instructor, has developed a teaching method that ensures anyone can grasp this innovative technique. By seamlessly transitioning between attacks, you will constantly stay one step ahead of your opponent, forcing them to react and creating opportunities for lightning fast, difficult to defend submissions. With “The Snake Lasso”, your adversary will find themselves caught in a dilemma, having to decide between being swept or succumbing to a submission. Master this technique and gain the upper hand in your guard game.

His second volume is about another lesser-utilized bottom position “Dynamic Z Guard Attacks” can help you elevate your half guard game by mastering small details under Gama's guidance. This video series will give you all of the necessary tools to develop an efficient and dangerous Z guard game. From sweeps and submissions to smooth transitions and effective defensive measures against common passes in BJJ, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of the Z guard.

Whether you're new to these positions or seeking to enhance your existing open guards, Gama's expert-level instruction will provide you with tricks, tips, and techniques to get you off bottom and into a dominant position.
