Born on January 10, 1989, in São Paulo, Brazil, Fabio Caloi developed a passion for martial arts from a young age, inspired by iconic Hollywood action heroes like Jean Claude Van Damme, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li. His journey into combat sports began with Judo at the tender age of 7. Although his time in Judo was short-lived, Caloi continued his martial arts exploration, transitioning to Karate at 9 and later delving into the world of Kung Fu. These early experiences set the foundation for Caloi's martial arts journey and ignited his lifelong pursuit of excellence in combat sports.
The Effective Knee Slice Tutorial by Fabio Caloi
Although Caloi initially enjoyed practicing Kung Fu, he began to question the effectiveness of the techniques without real-life sparring experiences. Gradually, his interest waned as he felt the need for a more practical and tested martial art. In 2003, shortly after turning 14, Caloi's cousin Bob and his brother Ricardo decided to attend a Jiu-Jitsu trial class at the renowned Macaco Gold Team academy, influenced by their father's enthusiasm for grappling. Curious, Fabio accompanied them to the gym, intending to explore Thai Boxing. However, upon witnessing a BJJ class, his interest was piqued, and he felt compelled to give it a try. From the outset, Caloi found great enjoyment in grappling and dedicated himself to training both Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu for a year. Eventually, he made the decision to fully commit to Jiu-Jitsu, leaving the striking discipline behind and focusing solely on his passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Diego Latorre played a pivotal role as Fabio Caloi's first coach, guiding him through his BJJ journey and bestowing upon him the blue and purple belts. However, in 2008, Latorre made the decision to step away from coaching Jiu-Jitsu, prompting Caloi to search for a new training environment. As a devoted admirer of Marcelo Garcia, Caloi eagerly accepted a friend's invitation to visit the esteemed Alliance academy. It was there that he had the privilege of meeting Fabio Gurgel, a renowned figure in the BJJ world, and was introduced to a world-class training regimen that would further shape and refine his skills.
Caloi thrived in the professional environment at Alliance, which had a profound impact on his competitive journey. His impressive performances led to significant achievements, including being awarded his brown belt by Master Gurgel in 2011. Recognizing Caloi's talent and dedication, he was also given the opportunity to serve as a BJJ instructor at the esteemed Be Fit sports academy. This recognition of his skills and the responsibility to impart his knowledge further solidified Caloi's position as a respected figure in the BJJ community.
In 2013, he narrowly missed the podium at the Mundial, but he bounced back in 2014, securing a gold medal at both the Pan American Championship and the Brazilian Nationals. These triumphs culminated in July 2014 when Caloi was rightfully awarded his black belt, a testament to his dedication, perseverance, and outstanding contributions to the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
In the years since, Caloi has gone on to continue competing in the adult divisions of the world’s toughest tournaments, including the IBJJF World No Gi Championships, where he won 3rd place in both 2019 and 2021. We’re looking to Fabio to continue dominating on the mats and perhaps even challenge for another world title before he hangs up the gi.
In the meantime, don’t forget to check out his offerings through BJJ Fanatics, “The Effective Knee-Slice Tutorial” which gives you a primer on this ‘basic’ pass. The devil is in the details!

In early 2012, Fabio encountered a setback when he sustained an injury that forced him to abstain from any Jiu-Jitsu training for three months. Despite the limited time for preparation, he made a bold decision to compete in the World Championship, widely regarded as the toughest tournament in the world. Although not in peak physical condition, Caloi's natural talent and skill shone through, earning him a remarkable bronze medal.
Since that time, he’s competed for another decade. That’s a true testament to his focus on strength and conditioning as a necessary complement to grappling. In order to stay healthy for this long, Caloi has also been careful with his diet and exercise to decrease the chances of recurring injury.
