The Pressure Passing Manual by Marco Barbosa

In the 1990's Marco returned to Brazil after fulfilling a scholarship in Japan at the University of Tenri. Upon his arrival in Brazil Marco continued his rigorous training regimes of combative sports as he competed on the tatami mats. In 1995 Marco decided to add Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to his training schedule, so he joined up with CIA Paulista under head coach Waldomiro Perez. After 4 months of training Marco entered into a Jiu Jitsu competition as a Purple belt and managed to reach the podium, after the event Marco decided to pursue a career in professional grappling. Marco was balancing competitive Judo and Jiu Jitsu as he endeavored to win tournaments in both disciplines. Marco would split his Jiu Jitsu training between CIA Paulista and the Godoi/Macaco academy.


Marco Barbosa became a formidable opponent on the world stage of grappling, as he developed an extremely effective way to pass the guard. In 1999 Marco became the CBJJ Brazilian National Champion and finished 3rd at the IBJJF World Championships after losing to Royler Gracie. Marco would finish in third place at the IBJJF World Championships for the next two years consecutively. Marco would also win two consecutive IBJJF International Masters Championships in the year 2000 and 2001. 

In 2001 After Roberto Godoi and Jorge Macaco Patino parted ways and formed their own gyms, Marco Barbosa decided to join more permanently with Roberto Godoi. Marco trained for a few months with Roberto before deciding to start his own academy Barbosa Jiu Jitsu. Marco would dedicate the next twenty years of his life teaching the art of Jiu Jitsu. Along his journey Marco would compete extensively on the world stage as he continued his coaching career through his academy. As a result of Marco's successes on the competition mat and inside the gym, he received many offers from well known practitioners to open academies together, as Marco turned them all down.

One of Marco Barbosa's students, Mr Helios Moyano who was also a high profile lawyer, came to Marco with a proposal. The pair would open a Mixed Martial Arts academy in the heart of Sao Paulo, and in an instant Barbosa MMA was born. Marco compiled experienced trainers from all aspects of the MMA game, as his academy became one of Brazil's premier clubs to train with. Marco now boasts 50 branches worldwide as his brand has grown substantially.

Marco Barbosa grew up in Aracatuba a central town of Sao Paulo Brazil. He was born in 1968 and is currently 53 years of age.

Marco Barbosa's Early Life!

Marco Barbosa grew up in Sao Paulo Brazil, his father Manuel was a student of Judo and was a huge influence on Marco. As a child Marco was extremely active as he ran around the streets of Brazil, playing soccer in the neighborhood with the other kids. Marco would climb all the trees and swim in the river, he would also play fight with other kids in the street, practicing the Judo he learnt from his father. 

By the time Marco turned 13 he committed fully to training more extensively in the art of Judo. Training under Judo Master Mr Umakeda, Marco began a schedule of training 7am till 10pm dailey. Marco was on a strict regime of not being allowed to go out at night or watch television. All of Marco's hard work and dedication paid off as he was awarded his Black belt in Judo in 1986 on his 18th birthday. Marco decided to become a full time Judo competitor as he looked towards an incredible future of accomplishments.

Marco lost to exceptional BJJ competitors like; Fredson Alves, Edson Diniz, Royler Gracie and Leo Vieira.
