The Trap Walk Guard Pass System by Manuel Ribamar
Riba was born in the fall of 1993 in Amazonas, Brazil. Manuel began his athletic pursuits by learning from several coaches in different sports, including Capoeira and Judo. Around the age of 12, Manuel started training informally with his brown belt brother, Bosco, and found that he enjoyed the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Ribamar trained locally under Master Pina until he was a purple belt. Manuel was offered a visit to Europe in order to learn from another master, Anderson Pereira of Icon BJJ. This was a great learning experience for the young Manuel. After a prolonged period of travel, Ribamar settled in Sao Paolo and joined up with Cicero Costha’s grappling association, PSLPB. Here, Riba was able to rub shoulders with top-level talent and learn to compete at a higher level.
While training under Costha, Manuel was awarded his brown belt. Soon after, he traveled to the United States in order to compete in the Pan American Championship. Although he didn’t get the gold he was looking for, Riba found a way to stay in the United States training for another month in order to also attend the IBJJF World Championships later that year. This time, he won first place and became the brown belt champion in his weight class.
Following his victory at the 2015 World Championships, Costha signed off on Master Ribeiro promoting the young champion to black belt. Since that time, Ribamar has continued to do amazing things on the mat. He’s medaled in several IBJJF Opens and won the world title again as a nogi black belt in 2019.
His most recent victory saw him standing atop the winners podium at the 2022 Pan American Championships. And, if the past is any indication, we can expect more awesome matches from Manuel Ribamar in the years to follow.

One of Riba’s most publicized victories came in 2020, on Fight to Win 147. There, Ribamar was matched up with Jonathan Alves for a middleweight bout with a lot of eyes on it. True to form, Manuel played carefully and was able to win a decision against a big name in Alves.
Who Did Manuel Ribamar Lose To?
Any grappler is going to have several losses on their record, as undefeated records are basically unheard of. In Riba’s case, one rival has drawn a lot of attention: Lucas Barbosa. Despite his amazing record, Ribamar has struggled to beat Barbosa in their five matchups.
The most recent came in the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand slam, where the two were pitted against each other at 85 kg. Ribamar played cautiously, looking to correct his mistakes from previous matches. Time expired with no score on the clock and Barbosa went ahead in the rivalry 5-0.
No doubt there will be more action between the two dominant superstars as they continue to test themselves on the same grappling circuit.
