Jubera is a Masters World Champion, a three-time Pan American Champion, and a National BJJ Champion. As of 2020, he’s also newly minted 3rd degree black belt in Jiu Jitsu under Saulo and Xande. He is one of the small number of americans to have achieved black belt in both BJJ and Judo, and he did so before either was popularized to the levels that they are today.

He first started grappling in high school, where he was voted the captain of his wresltings quad. He then joined the University of Michigan with an eye on wrestling, but found Brazilian Jiu Jitsu more interesting. He began training and, almost immediately after starting, began to teach kids classes. He’s been an instructor for his whole 20 year BJJ journey, and he’s got black belt foundation in Judo to back it up.

Early on under the Ribeiro brothers, Jubera made a connection with another living legend of the sport, Rafael Lovato, Jr. The two rose through the ranks together as brothers and remain close to this day, where they can still be found teaching guest seminars and each other’s schools. As this friendship grew, so did both of their skills. By 2006, Matt was a purple belt winning international competitions and Lovato was also well on the way to making a name for himself.

A couple years later in 2008, Jubera continued his streak of success. He won the Pan American Championships as a brown belt, which officially earned him black in Judo. He continued working hard and in 2009, he repeated his win at the Pan Ams. This time around, Jubera even managed to claim third in the open weight division. This performance earned the completely-drained Jubera his black belt from the Ribeiros from atop the podium.

In 2012, now over thirty, Jubera stayed hungry. He became the first American to win the IBJJF World Masters tournament. After a five year stint, he returned to the division at 35 to win it a second time, making him one of only four people to do so. Amazingly, his lifelong friend Rafeal Lovato, Jr. is also one of the four competitors to have achieved this feat.

In the spring of 2020, Matt Jubera was awarded his third stripe and happily continues to teach in his hometown in Colorado.

Matt’s age isn’t floating around out there on the web, but it’s likely that he’s approaching 40 this year. Why? He’s extremely close with another famous black belt who is 39: Rafael Lovato Jr. He also competed against Andre Galvao who is 39.

Matt Jubera's Best Fight of All Time

Matt Juber has competed so frequently and against so many skilled opponents that it’s a little challenging to identify one moment as his best. Still, it’s hard to argue with his 2012 black belt run at the IBJJF Masters World Championship.

After winning the Pan Am Championships as a brown belt in 2009, it had taken Jubera three years to get to the finals of IBJJFs most prestigious tournament. In 2012, he did just that. Matt stormed his way through the early rounds to find himself standing atop the winners podium with a gold medal.

Who Did Matt Jubera Lose To?

Despite his kind demeanor, friendly appearance, and family-man attitude, Juber is an elite grappler. He’s faced many of the world’s best middleweight black belts, and sometimes taken the loss. One of his old matches is available on YouTube, and features Matt squaring up against none other than a young Andre Galvao.

The two battled back and forth on the feet with Andre Galvao pulling guard in order to stay away from the devastating Judo throws of Jubera. Eventually, however, Andre was able to find a sweep and end up on top. From there, he initiated his familiar style of grinding top control and the match expired without much else happening. With the sweep secured, Galvao rode Jubera out to a victory via points.

      Matt Jubera Record

Matt Jubera competed most frequently from 2005 to 2014, and occasionally afterwards. He’s been at every major tournament: Pan Ams, IBJJF Worlds and World Masters, Fight to Win, the American Nationals, and many more. Still, his overall record hasn’t been compiled which is unusual for a competitor of his caliber. Rest assured, Jubera has put in his time at the highest levels, facing off against several living legends in tournaments.

      Matt Jubera Injuries

Many fighters and grapplers who dedicate their lives to the mat find themselves injured as their career progresses. Even a competitor like Matt Jubera has experienced some physical setbacks, although his have been minor due to his mindset when training. Jubera even did a guest appearance on a podcast recently where the topic of discussion was how to stay injury free over a long career. Matt is full of ideas for maintaining an active training and competition schedule while still staying injury free.

      Is Matt Jubera Retired?

After a long career as a professional grappler, it appears Matt Jubera is retired from the pro circuit. Given his competitive nature and record, however, we wouldn’t be surprised if he showed up at an IBJJF Masters tournament in the future. Jubera now spends his time and energy running his own gym, Jubera Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, in Broomfield, Colorado. The gym is a flourishing, community oriented place that focuses on catering to people of all ages and styles. On top of this, Jubera’s excellent pedigree and competition history creates a place where anyone can come to learn the gentle art.

One thing you’ll consistently hear from his students: Matt Jubera is an excellent teacher. He has worked hard to hone his craft not only as a competitor, but as a creator of instructional videos. He’s coordinated with BJJ Fanatics to film some unique content, “The Head Pressure Passing System”.. In this series, you’ll pick up some tips for using head controls to help you pass.
