Masahiro Iwasaki was born and raised in Kobe, the capital of Hyogo Prefecture in the Osaka Bay of Japan. He became fascinated by martial arts from an early age and started his journey with karate. Through the growth of Japanese MMA promotion Pride FC, his love for fighting grew with it. By the time Pride FC’s popularity was peaking, Masahiro was in his teenage years. He was particularly drawn to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after watching the famous and epic MMA battle in 2002 between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Bob Sapp, who outweighed Antonio by 127 pounds. Based on his performance and heart he showed, Masahiro was more than convinced on the efficiency of grappling and began training at the age of 15.
Masahiro first learned under instructor Yasuhiro Miyamoto who was one of the top grappling coaches in Masahiro’s hometown of Kobe. Masahiro trained under Miyamoto all the way until he reached brown belt, and was then awarded his black belt in 2010 by Marco Barbosa. After earning his black belt Masahiro spent a significant amount of time traveling abroad. He picked up a coaching career in Australia in 2011 for some time before returning to Japan. When he returned home and became established in his country, Masahiro joined the prestigious Carpe Diem in Tokyo, which has the reputation of being one of the most successful and top level Jiu Jitsu academies in Asia.
