Richie Martinez lived in Los Angeles when he started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He was training under Sean Bollinger at 10th Planet Vista academy once a week because it was too great a distance for him to travel. Richie would practise the techniques on his girlfriend that he learnt from his one class per week. This was how Richie would achieve his blue belt level.

Richie decided to enhance his training by joining up with Eddie Bravo directly out at 10th Planet headquarters. Eddie Bravo was a massive influence on Richie as he developed his Jiu Jitsu exponentially under his guidance. Richie became quite proficient in grappling and MMA, he debuted in amatuer MMA in 2013 through the Tuff N Uff fighting promotion. Richie won his first two fights by rear naked choke and guillotine.

Richie turned pro at the end of 2013 and joined up with Xplode Fight Series, where he won his first 3 fights in superb fashion. In his debut he defeated Phelan Fleming 21 seconds into the fight with a rear naked choke. His next two fights were just as dynamic, as he beat Edward Darby 56 seconds into the fight, and Julian Hernandez 22 seconds into the fight with his signature move the Japanese Necktie in both fights.

In 2014 Richie Martinez won two separate Naga World titles one in Las Vegas and one in Phoenix. Richie tried his hand at the Eddie Bravo Invitational where he submitted John Morgan, Matt Kaiser and Jake Swimney propelling himself to the final. Richie would then face the superstar Gary Tonon who defeated Richie with an inside heel hook.

In 2015 Richie Martinez opened his own branch of 10th Planet in San Diego, called 10th Planet Freaks Gym. At the Grand Opening Richie was awarded his Black Belt by Eddie Bravo. Richie Martinez entered an illustrious group of world class grapplers to receive his black belt in only 4 years.

Richie would go on to lose his next two MMA fights for Titan FC and Brave FC, but would spend the next 6 years competing successfully in prestigious events. He fought in ADCC trials, Quintet, Metamoris, Polaris and Submission Underground. Richie chalked up wins against Derrick Garza, Jake Shields and Kazushi Sakuraba among many others.
