Who is Raphael Carneiro?

Rafael carniero is a Brazilian born black belt in the art of jiu jitsu who has been training for over 15 years. He received his black belt from Marco Antonio Barbosa, known as Barbosinha in the Jiu-Jitsu community, a well-known Brazilian  national champion from the early days of submission grappling.

Carniero was born in Brazil and, like many young Brazilian men, found his way to grappling at an early age. Before long, he was well known on the local circuit and had garnered the attention of the local Brazilian instructors. After a period of time training as a budding professional,  Raphael  carniero moved to the United States to continue competing.

Raphael has competed extensively in IBJJF sanctioned tournaments particularly in the Northwestern region of the United States and Canada, where he has meddled several times over in both his own weight class and in the open divisions. He's claimed IBJJF Championships in Atlanta, Boston, Miami, New York, Toronto, Montreal, and many more.

Since receiving his black belt from Marco Antonio barbosa, Rafael Carneiro has been IBJJF certified and ranked among the top 50 black belts in the entire world by that same organization. He has competed, and still competes, in most of the main IBJJF tournaments in his area as well as in the World Masters, European Championships, and other international opens at the Masters level.

He is an outstanding coach who has produced high-level athletes that have meddled in the world IBJJF Championships and the IBJJF Pan American Championships as well. He owns and operates his own academy named Gentle Art Dojo in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. The gym is a GFTeam affiliate, proving their status as an internationally recognized place to train and learn the gentle art.

In addition to his work as a coach, Raphael carneiro has also built a name for himself by filming online instructionals. He's released some independent products as well As several products in coordination with BJJ fanatics. In particular, his two offerings "Dynamic Fundamentals” and “The Lasso Guard” are outstanding introductions to the world of submission grappling. Raphael Carneiro's Best Fight of All Time

Raphael Carneiro has fought so many times that it’s hard to pick one shining moment to claim as his best. Still, we’d like to think that his 2011 trip to the IBJJF Boston Open was his most memorable tournament. Although he had yet to make a name for himself on the professional competition scene, he managed to show up, keep calm, and take home the championship trophy in his weight division.

Competition grappling can't always be sunshine, puppy dogs, and rainbows. All fighters experience defeat at some point in their careers, and Raphael carneiro is no different. In 2018, Carnival had a fairly high profile match against Lucas Valle, a well-known and fearsome journeyman on the competition grappling circuit. The two were set to square off at 185 lb midway through July of that year and, although Carneiro fought very hard, he eventually lost a close decision to the vicious Valle.

Raphael Carneiro Injuries

Raphael Carneiro was not public with any major injuries, but he is a major proponent of maintaining an active lifestyle in order to prevent injuries as much as possible. He's published articles on his gym, Gentle Art Dojo’s,'s web page that advise people how to take better care of themselves and how to heal from injury. among the tips: take time off to nurse injuries, address your diet, avoid drinking, and fix your sleep schedule. These basic tips, Carneiro argues, We'll go a long way towards injury prevention. In this way, Jujitsu practitioners can set themselves up to be lifelong students who know how to endure a period of physical difficulty.

Is Raphael Carneiro Retired?

Rafael is not retired from professional grappling competition, and continues to compete in most of the major IBJJF tournaments, albeit he’s now in the Masters division. Still, if his SmoothComp record is  any indication, Rafael won't be slowing down anytime soon. 

Rafael Carneiro’s primary responsibility, when he's not competing, is to take care of his growing academy, Gentle Art Dojo in Chelmsford massachusetts. Running the school takes focus, and dedication, and Carneiro has seen the rewards start to pay off. The gym maintains an active roster of competitive students, as well as a family program that makes everybody feel welcome.
