Although her home gym may not be a household name, her professional affiliations are quite the opposite. Since 2019, Hughes has entered tournaments under the banners of two of the most prestigious grappling associations in existence: Grappling Fight Team, and Alliance Jiu-Jitsu.
Hughes’ first foray into physical fitness was not with martial arts. She began instead as a competition dancer and a kettle-bell instructor who focused on calisthenic methods. She found her way to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fairly late, at the age of 21. She was off to a fast start;it wasn’t even two months before she entered, and won, her first local tournament in Alberta.
In the 7 years she’s been training, Hughes has continued to win local competitions ®ional championships, as well as making it to the podium in major events such as the Pan American Championships, IBJJF International Opens and the Canadian National Championships.
Rebecca represents a new generation of Jiu-Jitsu athletes who are experts not only on the mats, but on social media. Her following has been a result not only of her performance in competition, but of her focused and intentional efforts online. She is likely to be found giving an interview on a podcast or answering questions for any of the many popular outlets for grappling in the media.
While working to establish herself as one of the premiere up-and-coming stars in the sport, Hughes’ also runs her own online BJJ training program called Camp Nebula. Her focus in this program is to provide an alternative to in-person group classes by creating a platform for individualized, 1:1 training programs that tailor feedback to each client.
