Although her home gym may not be a household name, her professional affiliations are quite the opposite. Since 2019, Hughes has entered tournaments under the banners of two of the most prestigious grappling associations in existence: Grappling Fight Team, and Alliance Jiu-Jitsu.

Hughes’ first foray into physical fitness was not with martial arts. She began instead as a competition dancer and a kettle-bell instructor who focused on calisthenic methods. She found her way to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fairly late, at the age of 21. She was off to a fast start; it wasn’t even two months before she entered, and won, her first local tournament in Alberta.

In the 7 years she’s been training, Hughes has continued to win local competitions & regional championships, as well as making it to the podium in major events such as the Pan American Championships, IBJJF International Opens and the Canadian National Championships.

Rebecca represents a new generation of Jiu-Jitsu athletes who are experts not only on the mats, but on social media. Her following has been a result not only of her performance in competition, but of her focused and intentional efforts online. She is likely to be found giving an interview on a podcast or answering questions for any of the many popular outlets for grappling in the media.

While working to establish herself as one of the premiere up-and-coming stars in the sport, Hughes’ also runs her own online BJJ training program called Camp Nebula. Her focus in this program is to provide an alternative to in-person group classes by creating a platform for individualized, 1:1 training programs that tailor feedback to each client.

Rebecca Hughes's Best Fight of All Time

One of Hughes’ most high-profile victories came in late September of 2020, at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slab Jiu Jitsu World Tour in Miami, Florida. Although she placed just out of medal range, in 4th, she had a tremendous submission victory against Taylor Sausser, who is a brown belt under Gustavo Machado.

Who Did Rebecca Hughes Lose To?

One tough loss came at the Pan Championships in 2020, where Huges faced Lavinia Barbosa in the women’s lightweight brown belt final. After a one-sided start, Hughes managed to fight back to some neutral positions but was tapped via armbar with just over two minutes left in the match.

Rebecca Hughes’ overall record has not been published.

Rebecca Hughes Injuries

Hughes’ began her Jiu-Jitsu journey after suffering a catastrophic spinal injury in 2012. While recovering, she found BJJ classes to be helpful physical therapy. She began to train full time after falling in love with the feeling of safety that Jiu-Jitsu provided her.

Is Rebecca Hughes Retired?

Rebecca Hughes is far from retired, and still has her sights set on achieving black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She continues to train, compete, and teach, all while she runs her budding online academy, Camp Nebula. Her trailblazing approach to 1:1 coaching is an attempt to shift how we think about the value of instruction.

Along those same lines, Hughes has released “The Spider Guard Handbook” with BJJ Fanatics in order to share her knowledge of this gi-based position. She focuses on the setups, controls, submissions, sweeps, and everything else you’ll need to know to begin incorporating a stronger spider guard into your game.
