Samir Chantre Biography

Samir Chantre was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 15th, 1988. Samir was first exposed to jiu jitsu as a young boy when he attended his brother’s yellow belt ceremony. Like many younger brothers, Samir wanted to follow his old brother and so he decided to join the Fabricio Academy, in Copacabana, led by Fabricio Martins. After a year training with Fabricio, Sami switched academies and began training with his brother under the legendary Carlson Gracie black belt, Sergio “Bolão” Souza. Although Samir ended up quitting after only a year as he was an avid football player, and chose to give soccer his full attention. It was not long though until Chantre’s good friend Alan Moraes convinced him to come back to the jiu jitsu mats. Alan had just received his black belt and was coaching at the Carlson Gracie academy. He invited Samir to his academy and became his primary instructor.

Later in his career as a brown belt, Samir would travel to the United States to train with his good friend Caio Terra. It was under Terra’s instruction that Samir began to earn some of his most notable tournament wins. The first prestigious tournament he was was the Las Vegas Open, receiving gold in the open weight division. Then he received a gold medal in the IBJJF World No GI competition. In 2009 Samir Chantre received his black belt from professor Moraes. Then In 2010, Samir decided to open his own gym. He did so in Modesto, California in the United States. Samir became affiliated with the Caio Terra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association (CTBJJA) as the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program director. Samir left the Caio Terra Association to form his own team in the year 2015. He would go on to form team Ares Jiu Jitsu with his former team mates Milton Bastos and Osvaldo Moizinho.
