Zach Maslany, born on June 8, 1983, is a native of Pennsylvania, United States. He spent his childhood in the cities of Northampton and Bethlehem. Maslany's love for sports was inculcated in him by his father, who enrolled him and his brother in karate lessons at a young age. He trained in Japan's striking-based combat style for many years and earned a black belt under Master Tiger Schulmann. His training in karate opened the doors to other martial arts styles, which led him to compete in kickboxing. He had an unbeaten record of 4-0-1 and then moved on to compete in boxing at the nationally famous Golden Gloves event.
Dismantling Leglocks by Zach Maslany
Maslany's career in mixed martial arts started by chance. One of his gym teammates had dropped out of a cage fight due to injury, and Zach decided to step up and replace him at the event. This debut in MMA was won by Maslany, who continued to compete in the sport, eventually conquering a title in the USMMA promotion.
After a submission loss via triangle choke at Reality Fighting 3 in February 2003, Maslany turned his attention to grappling and its importance in becoming a complete fighter. Although he was familiar with jiu-jitsu, it was not his primary focus at the time and required significant work. Maslany decided to immerse himself in the jiu-jitsu lifestyle by joining coach Eddie Bravo's 10th Planet Academy in California while also training with Robert Villafane in Pennsylvania.
JM Holland and Zach Maslany opened 10th Planet Bethlehem in Pennsylvania, a jiu-jitsu gym that has become one of the top no-gi academies in the United States. Holland and Maslany were longtime training partners who had been grappling together for years before deciding to open their own gym. They both had a passion for jiu-jitsu and a desire to share their knowledge with others.
10th Planet Bethlehem quickly gained a reputation for producing high-level no-gi competitors. Holland and Maslany's expertise in the 10th Planet system and their commitment to their students' growth and development have helped to establish the gym as a go-to destination for those looking to improve their jiu-jitsu skills.
Finishers Only is a sub-only jiu-jitsu tournament that was started by Zach Maslany and JM Holland in 2015. The idea for the tournament came about when Maslany and Holland realized that there was a lack of opportunity for sub-only athletes in the Tri-State area to compete in this setting. They aimed to create a platform for submission-only grapplers to showcase their skills and provide a space for the community to come together.
The mission of Finishers Only is to create an environment that emphasizes submission over points, and allows grapplers to display their creativity, technical skills, and fighting spirit. The tournament is open to all belt levels and has a unique ruleset that includes no time limit and no points. Matches can only be won by submission or disqualification, which encourages competitors to go for the finish and create exciting, high-action matches.
Since its inception, Finishers Only has grown in popularity and has become a well-known event in the jiu-jitsu community. The tournament has expanded to include events in other locations, such as the Finishers Open in San Diego, and has attracted high-level competitors from all over the world. The event has also spawned its own team, the Finishers MMA/10th Planet Bethlehem squad, which includes some of the top grapplers in the game.

Zach Maslany's Best Fight of All Time
We think that one of Maslany’s most standout moments came when he was a brown belt in 2016. He found himself standing on the podium of the 2016 IBJJF No Gi Pan Championships as a bronze medalist. The Pan Championships is one of the most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world, and winning a medal at such an event is a significant achievement. It typically attracts many high-level competitors from all over the world, making the competition fierce and challenging. Winning a medal requires skill, strategy, and dedication to the sport.
Who Did Zach Maslany Lose To?
Following a submission loss in MMA via triangle choke at Reality Fighting 3 in February 2003, Maslany redirected his focus to grappling and acknowledged its importance in becoming a complete fighter. Even though he was acquainted with jiu-jitsu, it was not his primary area of concentration at that time, and he recognized that it required a considerable amount of work. As a result, Maslany made a decision to dive into the jiu-jitsu culture and joined coach Eddie Bravo's 10th Planet Academy in California. Simultaneously, he continued his training with Robert Villafane in Pennsylvania.
Zach Maslany Record
Zach Maslany’s complete record isn’t known, but he achieved great things in BJJ and was also a professional fighter with five fights to his name before converting to a pure grappler.
Zach Maslany Injuries
Maslany hasn’t discussed any major injuries, but it’s likely that he’s experienced some wear and tear as a result of years on the mat. Our knees, in particular, seem to take a beating whenever we go near the 10th Planet folks! Still, Maslany has stayed healthy through both an MMA and a BJJ career, thanks in part to his strength and conditioning routine.

Is Zach Maslany Retired?
Zach Maslany is not actively competing at the moment… he’s hosting the competitions as a founder of Finishers Only Grappling. He could still return to challenge the masters division at any time, though, and we’d love to see it happen.
When he’s not working hard to improve his game or coach up the next generation through his work under Eddie Bravo as a 10th Planet affiliate owner, he’s filming instructional content with us here at Fanatics HQ in Boston.
In his time spent with us, Maslany has shared his vision and coaching style through five awesome video instructionals: “Warming up the 10th Planet Way”, “Dismantling Leg Locks”, “Leglocks to Passing, Passing to Leglocks”, “The 10th Planet Half Guard”, and “Going to the 10th Planet”. Lest we forget: EBI and the 10th Planet guys developed their reputation for leglock mastery before the arrival of the Danaher Death Squad. To be sure, both systems were developed in tandem but the 10th Planet system pays more attention to bottom half-guard than any other system out there.
If you’re looking to improve your lockdown, whip-up to dogfight, grab a whizzer and head for mission control (or even if you just want to know what that all means) make sure you check out these awesome and comprehensive primers on the 10th planet system. Maslany is making champions out in Pennsylvania using this system;get at it!
