RESULTS! - 2018 World IBJJF No-Gi Championships

This past weekend, the 2018 World IBJJF No-Gi Championships took place.  There were many new names on the podium, as well as favorites such as Gordon Ryan and Beatriz Mesquita winning both their weight division as well as the absolute titles.

Breakdown of Black Belt Finals:

Male absolute 

Final: Gordon Ryan defeated Yuri Simoes 0-0, 1-0 advantage

Gordon had already defeated Yuri earlier in the day in their semifinal weight division match up (via points), but this match was much closer.  Gordon got an early advantage for a near butterfly sweep on Simoes in the first minute of the match. The remainder of the match was Simoes working to pass Gordon's guard, almost getting an advantage for a near pass (1 referee scored it an advantage, the other 2 did not) at the last few seconds of the match.  

Male roosterweight:

Nobuhiro Sawada defeated Cicero Saldana Paiva via decision

Sawada hit a last-second sweep on Paiva, who was ahead 6-4 in the last 30 seconds of the match- evening up the score.  This move helped him win the referees' decision 2 to 3.

Male light-featherweight

Joao Miyao defeated Tomoyuki Hashimoto via decision

Both competitors got points for sweeps, and were unable to pass each other's guard.  In the end, the referees awarded Miyao the unanimous decision after the match ended 2-2, 1-1 advantage,

Male featherweight

Kennedy Maciel def Gilson Nunes 2-0

Cobrinha's son, Kennedy, in his first major tournament as a black belt, was able to beat Gilson Nunes via an ankle pick which he hit at the start of the match as Nunes was pulling guard.

Male lightweight

Gianni Grippo defeated Marcio Andre via rear naked choke

Gianni was behind on points at the last minute of the match, but was able to take Marcio's back at the last minute.  Once there, he was trying to unlock the body triangle to receive back mount points, as well as attacking for the choke- which he was able to secure at the last few seconds of the match,

Male middleweight

Hugo Marques defeated Jaime Canuto 2-0

Hugo was awarded 2 points in the final minutes of the match by the referee.  It seemed like he had Jaime in a tight guillotine and Jaime pushed his way out of bounds.  

Male medium-heavyweight

Josh Hinger defeated Marcos Tinoco via north-south choke

Josh Hinger, became a three time IBJJF World No Gi champion after defeated Marcos Tinonco with a north-south choke.

Male heavyweight

Tim Spriggs defeated Jackson Sousa via referee's decision

Tim Spriggs won his first major title at black belt with a close referee's decision against Jackson in a back and forth 4-4 match.

Male super-heavyweight

Kaynan Duarte defeated James Puopolo via guillotine

Kaynan was able to snatch an arm in guillotine on Puopolo as he shot in for a double leg at the two and a half minute mark.  This was the first major black belt title for the newly promoted Kaynan.

Male ultra-heavyweight

Gordon Ryan defeated Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu via DQ

Gordon was on his way to victory via points, as Cyborg was down 0-2 due to repeated penalties for stalling.  However, he received the DQ at the last few seconds of the match for slapping Gordon in the face.

Female absolute

Beatriz Mesquita defeated Jessica Flowers 0-0, 2-0 advantage

In a relatively close match, Bia came close to taking Jessica's back in the final minute of the match- which gave her the second advantage of the match.  

Female light-featherweight

Mayssa Bastos def Pati Fontes via rear naked choke

Bastos put on a dominating performance (having just won EBI last week against Panti in overtime of the finals), when she was able to submit Fontes after leading 9-0, with only 19 seconds left on the clock.  Twenty one year old Bastos, just earned her black belt this past June, after winning the IBJJF Brown Belt (Gi) World Championships.

Female featherweight

Ffion Davies defeated Amanda Monteiro 7-0

Ffion Davies becomes the first World Champion from Welsh, as she was able to pass and mount Amanda Monteiro.  Ffion had just also received her black belt just two weeks ago!

Female lightweight

Catherine Perret defeated  Tammi Musumeci by advantages

Perret, in her first year as a black belt was able to win via two advantages over former No Gi World Champion, Tammi Musumeci- the sister of two time Black Belt Gi Champion Mikey Musumeci.

Female middleweight

Beatriz Mesquita defeated Ana Carolina Vieira 2-0

Bia was able to scored an early takedown against Ana to get the 2 points to win the match.

Female medium-heavyweight

Luanna Alzuguir def Claudia do Val 4-4, 2-1 advantage

Luanna was down by points in the last few moments of the match, before she was able to take the back of Claudia, and receive back mount points in a thrilling comeback.

Female heavyweight

Nathiely de Jesus defeated Maria Malyjasiak 6-6, 1-0 advantage

Female super-heavyweight

Jessica Flowers defeated Nivia Moura via kimura
